Until Jared catches her in an unguarded moment and see a vulnerable, softer side. It fires his blood with a need to find out more. I went into reading this book not really knowing what to expect. I really enjoyed it from beginning to end. I love for my erotica to not just be about sex but also have a back story and a bit of romance. For me, it makes it a lot more believable. The story of how Jared and Ninia get together is sweet yet sexy at the same time.

Ninia is a strong woman who knows what she wants but also has the ability to give comfort to others in her profession as a nurse but especially in her romantic life. She lost her husband in the war and has not been with anyone since him. Jared is stubborn and feeling like his life is over after losing his leg in the war. He does not know what to do with himself now that he cannot be a soldier. Ninia is able to open Jared up enough that they start having feelings towards each other that go from lust to love.

The erotic part of the story is super steaming hot. It may not be for everyone because it does have a strong BDSM storyline. Ninia and her husband were heavily involved in the BDSM lifestyle and frequented a dungeon. I was a little confused at first what a dungeon entailed but it was not what I pictured at all. Jared also went to various dungeons around the world. The story gets steamy when they meet up at a dungeon. Their sex is incredible but it is also where their love grows.

I will be definitely buying the rest of the books in this series. I'm totally hooked to the secondary characters that have been set up for future novels. I read the book in one sitting and felt a great love for the characters. They were real and showed emotion that is often missing in some erotica.

3.0 out of 5 stars Roped (Heart of the West, Book 1) September 10, 2012

Jared has lost his foot in the war and is being tended to by a bossy, beautiful blonde nurse who stirs his desire to Master her. Ninia is Jared's nurse, a submissive and a war widow who has yet to move on from her dead husband. Jared awakens her need to submit, and she knows he's capable of Mastering her in the way she craves. She does what she can to get the ball rolling, and Jared is shocked to discover his bossy nurse wants him in that way, despite his new disability. Can the two heal each other and find happiness in their new circumstances?

I really liked the fact that the author chose to do a concept like this with a disabled war veteran. It's different and it's heart tugging. I didn't think that Jared was less of a man because of his injuries, but having a nurse as a sub is pretty convenient. The pace of their relationship considering they were both a little bit gun-shy didn't really work for me. The biggest issue for me was that the relationship never really seemed to feel natural nor did it rise a level or two above superficial. It felt very monotone, it dotted the I's and crossed the T's, but the romantic execution was lacking.

As for the BDSM portion, I would say that the sex scenes were average. I also think that those who are willing to read a romance that features BDSM, even if it's not their favored genre, will probably be put off by the menage-a-quatre scene. That's the kind of thing that really takes "romance" readers by surprise and not in a happy way. I didn't mind the scene being included, I only wished it had been better. I also think those that do favor BDSM stories may possibly be a little bored by this.

I wouldn't say the book is terrible, I'd say it's just average as a whole though. I just think the execution could have been much better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing read January 27, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
The writing is really solid; the emotions realistic and honest. It was good to read how triad's are not so unusual and older people with open minds can accept them because they can see the genuine love and affection as well as fun that crosses between the three people involved. Can't wait to move onto the next ones in this series as well as explore some of the other offerings of the writer.

If reality intruding on your romance is a problem, then switch to fantasy. Humans are flawed and how they complete one another to heal is a huge part of what makes a romance realistic.

4.0 out of 5 stars This is a very moving story. September 17, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
It tells of how a soldier returns home wounded and feeling less than a full man. Ann worked her magic and spun a tale of how a strong submissive knows what her master needs.

1.0 out of 5 stars DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY! March 18, 2013
By Amanda
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This books sounded like it had promise but I was left wishing I hadn't wasted my money. First, the books claims to be 226 pages but it was not unless they were post it size pages.I never would have paid that much for a book this short. Second, if you are going to write a book with a military service member as a lead character, than at least have have basic details correct, i.e. do not refer to an officer as having enlisted unless it's clear he began as an enlisted service member, otherwise credibility goes down the drain. Also the feelings of love didn't come through, just that they enjoyed the sex between them. The rest of my lack of enjoyment in this book is likely due to the fact I generally stay away from these books and had purchased it first for a friend to read. I found the fact that the three siblings all were into this and open about it with each other semi creepy and the menage scene was entirely too much me and I wanted to be sick. Again, my personal preference on that part, but I still would have rated it low for the other reasons listed.

I am not into BDSM, but found this book to be very well written. The author goes to the trouble to explain each aspect, and I commend the writer.

I thought the BDSM aspects of the book may be off putting since it's not my thing, but I found it sexy without being to over the top. Definitely for 18 and over

More About the Author

Ann Jacobs is a sucker for lusty Alpha heroes and happy endings. Erotic romance, to her, is the perfect combination of sex, sensuality, deep emotional involvement and lifelong commitment--the elusive fantasy women often dream about but seldom achieve.

First published in 1996, Jacobs has sold nearly a hundred books and novellas. She is currently nominated for Romantic Times' 2012 Lifetime Achievement Award for excellence in erotic romance, as well as having had books nominated by RT reviewers for best erotic romance. Her books have earned awards including the Passionate Plume, the Desert Rose, and More Than Magic She has been a double finalist in separate categories of the EPPIES and From the Heart RWA Chapter's contest. Four of her books have been translated and sold in several European countries.

A CPA and former hospital financial manager, Jacobs now writes full-time, with the help of Mr. Blue, the family cat who sometimes likes to perch on the back of her desk chair and lend his sage advice. He sometimes even contributes a few random letters when he decides he wants to try out the keyboard. (Most of the time Blue just curls up, hides his eyes with his paws...and sleeps!)

She loves to hear from readers, and to put faces with names at signings and conventions.
