As a clinical psychologist who uses the Rorschach regularly and teaches it to graduate students, I have always relied upon this volume as a bible of sorts for all-things-Rorschach. The newest edition is a wonderful updating of the classic. Despite being about the same number of pages as the last edition, this volume packs much more information in, and is written in a more concise and relevant way. Exner has updated some of the historical lore regarding Hermann and the roots of his test, as well as incorporating a full chapter on controversies surrounding the Rorschach. Furthermore, the interpretive section is modeled after the format of the very useful Primer on Rorschach Interpretation, and incorporates all of the recent changes and innovations in the Comprehensive System. This volume could easily be the "one stop shop" for Rorschachers, as it has normative data, administration and scoring guidelines, and a well-organized interpretive section. Who could ask for more?

The Exner coding system can be daunting to learn at first. Out of the three textbooks used in my projective course, this text was by far the best. The introductory chapter discusses the test's background in an interesting manner. The remaining chapters provide guidance to coding and interpretation. The book is well-organized with numerous examples interspersed throughout the text. There are also 6 complete protocols of varying complexity for additional coding practice. I found these sample items to be more consistent with one another and clear-cut than the practice coding items in the Exner workbook.

Overall- highlight, tab, write all over this book, and keep it always within reaching distance.

The Rorschach, and also the Comprehensive System (RCS), has been inadvertently criticised - continuosly - although the research associated with the reliability and validity of the method has increadingly accumulated during the years - and in particular in the late 90's. However, as Kubiszyn (?) et al. recently have written, this research is not all that easily found, nor is it for the ordinary clinician particularly easy to read and understand, part of it being so complex and statistically advanced. Therefore, this book - published by Wiley in 2003 - is so important. It not only gives the development and structure of the RCS, nor the strategy of cluster analysis, but the book contains hundreds of well conducted bot reliability and in particular validity studies, aggregated in proper places where the different variables and ratios are described - and this is an immense improvement as compare to the 1993 (3rd) edition. I, who am the person primarily responsible for convincing people in Finland of how well the RCS functions - as well as teaching psychologists to mastery - am extremely grateful for all the additional and well organized research published here. When I wrote a about 20 pages review of reliability and validity for the Yearbook Rorschachiana 2003 this would have bene an assed to have - now I am primarily using it in an RCS educational program (165 lectures)in Finland. I am also producing an excerpt of probably some 50-60 singlespaced pages in Finnish regarding in particular the most important peaces of scientific work, confirming the reliability and validity reseacrh related to the RCS!

This book is an excellent tool to have while you are learning the Rorschach or to keep on your shelf if you are scoring. I learned the Rorschach already but I only had the Exner Workbook (another must have). I bought this book b/c I will be taking a comprehensive exam which includes Rorschach interpretation and scoring questions. It breaks down the structural summary very well and highlights what scores to concentrate on and what they mean. I have not begun practicing the scoring yet but I know from looking through the book there are numerous examples to use. If you are learning the Rorschach or are in a profession where you are administering it, this and the Exner Workbook are 2 books that you MUST MUST have.

The book is a must have for complete understanding of this projective test. Which is in my opinion, a powerful projective test. It involves a bit of hard work but it is not beyond the grasp of the young or mature psychologists. Today a software is available that will help with mechanical tasks of the test, recommended! However, doing the test without software really pushed me to think about my patient's responses and their non-verbal lenguage during the application of the cards, the caculation of the different aspect of personality explored, and I found some excellent views of human personality along its pages. The book is a must have as it guides you through the analytical elements of the test. It is one of my basic tests in my practice. Even for the psychologist that is more CBT instead of a psychoanalyst, the insights from the test are greatly helpful. I used CBT too. PS. I am a lacanian analyst.

Author: John E. Exner Jr.,PhD

I stumbled over the book "The Rorschach" here on Amazon, written by John E. Exner Jr., PhD professor Emeritus in Psychology at Long Island University in New York, on Amazon.com. I decided to buy it. Dr. Exner is the executive director of the Rorschach Workshop, which he founded in in 1968, and Curator of the Rorschach Archives and museum in Bern, Switzerland. He is past president of the International Rorschach Society.

Dr. Exner starts out by sketching out the history and development of the Rorschach; the origin of the test and Rorschach's work. From there he guides us through the development of the Rorschach test itself, the concept of projection and projective techniques as well as the comprehensive system. He winds up the first chapter with focusing on controversy, criticism and decisions. Part two is a natural continuation of chapter one, guiding the reader through administration and scoring of the Rorschach test. Next follow coding and criteria, discussed of no less than 33 pages: the form determinant, the movement determinant, active-passive superscripts, chromatic color determination, achromatic color determination. The form dimension response, pair and reflection response and the blend response. Dr. Exner winds up the second chapter by putting search light on interscorer agreement and references.

In Part three Dr. Exner bores into the Nature of the Test, by exposing Rorschach's Concept of the Method and the Rorschach as a Decision-Making Task. The book continues with the Range of Potential Responses, flowed by The Response Process, The Input Process and The Classification Process.
