5.0 out of 5 stars The Holy Grail of Roryness, August 22, 2007
By
This review is from: Rory Gallagher: Live at Rockpalast (DVD)
OMG --- When I got Rory at Montreaux I thought it was great (it was/still is), but when I put this Rockpalast DVD on and was totally captured and enthralled by his opening acoustic performances, I knew I was in for a treat, and man did it treat. This is why I loved live rock shows when I went to them back in the day, and why I still buy them 30 years later. All reviews will note Rory's energy and happiness in this set of performances because it is apparent. It is a bit raw, to be expected with 30 year old recordings, but it does not matter, its plenty good enough on a 5.1 system. The concerts are all great, with one slightly low point being a jam with Eric Burdon which just never really gets going (it has its moments, but overall it's weak). But an incredibly high point is a jam with Jack Bruce at the end of DVD3. On a little backstage talk between Rory and Jack, it seems that they are going to return to the stage for an encore to play "Politician", and Rory seems to indicate he has no idea how it goes. Jack gives him the beat by way of a hum, and on stage they go. Rory starts with notes that indicate he does not know the song, but a few bars into it he "gets it" and then he may as well be Clapton. The look of glee on Bruce's face when he realizes Rory has it and goes heads up jamming with him is worth the price of the DVD alone to anybody who can appreciate the significance of the moment. A sure buy for any Rory fan --- and for anyone who does not know Rory's work but likes to explore rock guitarists. Get It!

5.0 out of 5 stars Got Montreux? You've GOT to have this, too!!!, August 16, 2007
This review is from: Rory Gallagher: Live at Rockpalast (DVD)
If you've found your way to this page then you're enough of a Rory fan to absolutely appreciate this release - just buy it!

If you already own the Montreux set and are wondering if this is worth paying for, too - what the heck are you waiting for?! Just buy it!

Mine just came in earlier today and I'm loving it! The performances contained on these three dvds are, if anything, better than the Montreux shows. Rory is absolutely on fire throughout and his energy and pure joy of playing are on fine display here. I've been grinning from ear to ear the whole time I've been watching it!

From the packaging (liner notes, photos, etc...) to the actual performances, this is just an excellent purchase! The camera work is solid enough that you'll feel like you're right there, none of that herky jerky MTV style quick edits. Music-wise, well, it's just real live rock and roll courtesy of the great Mr. Gallagher!

Keep in mind that Rory's heyday was in a time when the technology wasn't what it is now. What you get here is the whole real deal, it's raw enough that you've got all the between song guitar tune-ups, feedback, distortion, microphone glitches, etc..that were inherent in the live setting of the day. Compared to the ultra-slick concert dvds put out by current artists, I'll take this any day!

The Montreux set is great and I'm thrilled to have it but, for my money, this is the even better release! Hats off to Donal Gallagher for doing such a loving/excellent job of managing Rory's catalogue! Product like this shows there's still hope for the music industry afterall.

Now, quit reading about it and buy it for yourself! Rock out!

5.0 out of 5 stars Really great set for the Rory Gallagher fan, August 6, 2007
This review is from: Rory Gallagher: Live at Rockpalast (DVD)
I've only made it through the first of three DVDs so far, but the first disc is great. Yes, there are flaws in the videotape master (the shows, at least most of them, were shot on videotape and therefore will show some flaws, but this is the best these old videotapes will look. For some reason, it's much harder to clean up old videotape than it is old films. It's very enjoyable, despite the limitations of the technology back in the 1970s and 1980s. Gallagher's electric guitar playing is on fire on disc 1, and his acoustic, folky covers early on in the first set are unique and add color to Gallagher's stage presentation. It's too bad Gallagher was taken from the world too soon, and at such an early age. This collection is good. Fans need to pick it up.

Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply amazing, July 18, 2008

This review is from: Rory Gallagher: Live at Rockpalast (DVD)
Absolutely amazing. Again Rory at his finest. Absolutely a must have for any Rory fan. I own all of his concert dvd's and this 3 disc set covering 5 appearances. The humbleness of this guitar Master brings you right down to earth. I espically enjoy the 2 jam session gigs on disc 2. I won't spoil it, you will just have to watch it your self. I know it has been said of others but where would his music be today had we not lost him at such a young age and definately in his prime. ROCK ON RORY, YOU'RE FOREVER IN MY HEART.I just wish I could touch that old Fender, once.

I guess I was a little spoiled, having watched and listened to the fabulous "Live at Montreaux" DVD before this one. Here, Rory and his band are as good as ever, however, the sound quality, especially on the first DVD, is compressed and sounds "bootleggish". Also, this German TV announcer breaks into the concert every now and then, with this inane and very annoying chatter. Those quibbles aside, this is fine stuff that encompasses the time period 1976 - 1990. Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Rory Gallagher: Live at Rockpalast (2007), March 8, 2008
This review is from: Rory Gallagher: Live at Rockpalast (DVD)
Have been a big fan of Rory's since the early days of Taste. This DVD is a Great Tribute to the musicians of yesteryear. Today everything is so commercial hardly anyone creates music that is Great, song after song. There is not a bad song to be found on this collection. I personally liked the begining and last shows on the DVD the most. If you like Stevie Ray, Alvin Lee, Jimmie Page you will not be dissapointed. I never really new Rory as an acoustic player, where he is equally Fantastic. Very intimate sets, with pretty good sound for the time.

Enjoy!

This three DVD set is excellent overall. The only issue is that the vocals and the videos were out of sync on part of disc 2 and 3. Other than that, the video quality was excellent and sound was excellent. If you are a fan, this is a must have set.

5.0 out of 5 stars Real live at Rockpalast!, June 24, 2010

Even though I never had the chance to see Rory live This DVD gives a good picture of what Rory was like. The energy he displayed during these performances was tremendous. The "Jam Session" portions were especially revealing. Rory's fan interaction was second to none. He was happy to shake fans hands, while he was playing. He was not one of the current crop that thinks they're God's gift to their fans, shunning the very fans that ensure their lifestyle. Rory engaged his fans, making them part of the performance. Rory showed a good stage presence, and had great music, and this showed him at his best, and showed him at times when he off, but it showed Rory.

The sound quality of these shows was good for the day. And the modern technology used to adjust the sound quality made this by far the best Rory Gallagher video collection yet. The video portion was great. It was shot at various angles and was the highest quality of any of Rory's video that is available today. On top of everything else, just like Rory himself, these were produced with the fans in mind. Instead of getting 35 minutes of video for too much money, you get around ten hours of Rory for an extremely reasonable price.

These shows make me feel like I have an insight to Rory that I would not have been able to from just a concert alone. If you've been fortunate enough to see Rory in concert you will enjoy these tremendously. I you have not, You will have seen him after viewing these. And if you don't know who Rory was, you will get to see not only one of the Greatest guitar players in history in action, but one of the great entertainers.

This collection is a must have for the Rory fan and the guitar fan alike. Don't miss out on this. Get your copy now and see why Rory is considered one of the greats.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Legend Never Dies !, February 23, 2008

Any one who knows the name, will jump at the chance of seeing Rory on stage once again. In a world of "American Idol," created self importance, to remember a time when a musician learned his craft, on the back roads, and small dives, around the world, will enjoy watching a master, playing his music, because of love and passion, and not for the fame and celebrity. The discs are filled with Rory`s energy, spirit, and most of all amazing musical talent. Even the interviews, make me smile, and most of all, remind me how much we lost, when Rory left us. Love music, buy this package !
