The best of Noel Rosa, February 3, 2006
This review is from: Rosa, Noel: Songbook 1 (Audio CD)
This lovingly compiled CD offers a taste of Noel Rosa - the 30s composer, bon vivant, and wit who was also a musical genius and a brilliant lyricist, from Rio's Vila Isabel. No one has written music more wryly, ironically, or wisely about the joys, pitfalls, and absurdities of daily life and love - like a straight Lou Reed, but better. Along the way, you'll get a tour of Brasilian musical styles which is hard to beat.
The entire Lumiere series of songbooks, produced by impresario Sergio Cabral, is a fantastic set of CDs which collect the best songs by the best performers. Other Brasilian compilations have tried to emulate this idea of one composer/many performers, but the collections tend to be spotty. Whether you like all the styles here, all the performances are great.
