Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 7-10-Hull takes an incisive look at her subject's background, adult life, and the social climate leading up to that fateful day in December, 1955. She relates with great detail how Parks's quiet, defiant act of refusing to give up her bus seat to a white person galvanized the black community and propelled local ministers-Rev. Ralph Abernathy and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.-into national prominence. The woman's participation in civil rights activities, the suffering endured by her family and community after her arrest, the legal battles arising from the boycott, and the maneuvers instituted by the white business and political leaders to stymie it are all described. However, disappointments and personal hardships stemming from Parks's stance are not discusssed. Black-and-white photographs enhance the text. This biography aptly highlights the achievements of this living legend of the civil rights movement.

"... Even if it means Changing the World:"

Rosa Parks, a civil rights leader whom stands up to a white officer when she was told to move to the back of the bus. She talked back and was sent to jail. Around the United States she is now known as a hero. She has lost her job at the NCAAP and now sews clothing and blankets to make money. Her husband, Mr. Parks quit his job because if his wife was not able to work there, he won't either. Rosa Parks has changed the world in my perspective.

I really liked this story. The reason is because it is so true. It really speaks to you. as for me, this book is so real and descriptive it is as the words are popping right out of the page. I would compare this book to Surviving Hitler because this book gets as much as in depth into the story as Rosa Parks. This was an awesome book to read!
