I've always struggled with how to incorporate my faith into my comics in an authentic way. One Lent, I decided to do a comic adaptation of the Rosary Prayer rather than giving up chocolate or soda. It was eventually published by the good sisters at Pauline Books during the Year of the Rosary.

More About the Author

Gene Luen Yang began drawing comic books in the fifth grade. In 1997, he received the Xeric Grant for Gordon Yamamoto and the King of the Geeks, his first comics work as an adult. He has since written and drawn a number of titles, including Level Up and the Rosary Comic Book. His 2006 book American Born Chinese was the first graphic novel to be nominated for a National Book Award and the first to win the American Library Association's Michael L. Printz Award. It also won an Eisner Award for Best Graphic Album - New. A short story from The Eternal Smile, his 2009 collaboration with Derek Kirk Kim, won an Eisner Award as well. His graphic novella Prime Baby was also nominated for an Eisner Award. Recently, Gene signed on to write the graphic novel continuation of the popular Nickelodeon cartoon series Avatar: The Last Airbender.

This little gem belongs in every CCD program and every Catholic home. Children too often learn to say the rosary repetitions first with the mystery meditations - the essence of this exquisite prayer - introduced but not adequately stressed. With this book children learn the scriptural approach from the beginning. Each bead is represented by a comic book image of Jesus, Mary and others in their gospel context. It is possible to say the complete rosary without the use of beads, using the story board frames as reference. The narrative flows evenly from one mystery to the next, using homey, amusing imagery where appropriate but not sparing the sorrow and tears. Adults will also enjoy this book and find it easy to stay focused in prayer with this gentle companion.

This comic is one of a kind! It is a great way of engaging young people in understanding the life of Christ and his Mother. The comic uses language that is easy to understand for both children and adults. Recommended for families and catechetical programs. The author has truly responded to the Holy Father's request for a new presentation of this powerful prayer (#42-43, ROSARIUM VIRGINIS MARIAE).

This is a great book- Gene Yang does a fabulous job of illustrating the 20 mysteries of the rosary, making this comic book great for meditating on the life of Jesus while praying the rosary. I would recommend buying multiple copies to give to friends and family.
