3.0 out of 5 stars Encouragement for the sick
This is a good book, and I kept in my hospital bag when my daughter was going through treatments - It was a little hard to read - her fault or my own? I don't know, but there is a wealth of truth in it. The encouragement is more for the sick than the care taker.

5.0 out of 5 stars A treasure and a blessing for the hurting, December 10, 2004
This review is from: Rose from Brier: (Paperback)
If you or anyone you know have a debilitating condition (cancer, disability, lupus, ms, etc.), PLEASE get this book to them right away! The emotions that no one else understands will be mirrored back to them in a way that will challenge them to depend on God.

I've never heard a more realistic picture of suffering. This little book has had a profound influence on my life. Amy spoke encouraging words to me and expressed my deepest feelings in such a poetic way.

Amy Carmichael, a missionary to young girls in India, suffered a debilitating injury/ illness that confined her to bed. This book grew out of the pain, restless nights, struggles, and frustrations that ensued. She compiled the devotionals (written for the staff and children in her orphanage), correspondence, musings, and journal entries, and poems from that thorny period in the hopes that God would use them to minister to others in similar situations. In other words, she prayed that a rose-- this book-- would grow from the briar patch of her life.

As she experiences the ups and downs of attitude, faith, and energy, honest and poignant observations about the disheartening affects of pain are mixed with metaphors and excerpts of hymns that brightened her day. Each 1-2 page section can be read in any order depending on your current physical and mental state.

This is strong medicine-- meant to be taken in small doses. You will be touched.

5.0 out of 5 stars Touched my heart like nothing else, May 19, 2005

I have been quite ill for several years, and have read many many christian books about illness, etc. Nothing, however, has touched my heart and encouraged my faithfulness like this little book. I cannot recommend it highly enough for anyone who is physically or emotionally struggling.

5.0 out of 5 stars Especially helpful perspective of suffering from one who suffered., August 2, 2009

This review is from: Rose from Brier: (Paperback)
Some years ago this book was recommended to me and I have found it very helpful for sharing with people who are in the midst of physical suffering. As the author observed too often materials written for the sick are by those who are well. Perspective can be lacking in such writing. However, Amy Carmichael does not dwell on herself to gain perspective on suffering. However, her experience of a protracted illness and confinement give authenticity to what she shares about suffering and God's ability to meet the sufferer and give comfort and strength.

A wonderful resource to refer to many times and for many years to come. Priceless and timeless! It leads you to The Source of blessing through infirmity and pain. A real treasure! Both my husband and myself have been sweetly reminded of God's faithfulness and mercy through this little book, as we struggle with chronic illness and pain. Hope to order more of these books soon and give to many who we know are suffering.
