The song "A rose for the dead" is absolutely ToT's classic. AWESOME! It would fit perfectly in the divine "Velvet Darkness They Fear", because the style is exactly the same. "Der Spiegel" is interesting, but different from any earlier ToT stuff. The rhythm is tense, heavy, but I wouldn't say gothic. At least not as their early stuff (maybe modern gothic...). "As the shadows dance" is the english version of the great "Der Tanz der Schatten", but unlike the next two disasters, this one is FAITHFUL to the original! Now the cheesy part of the EP, the remixes of "Black as the devil painteth" and "And when he falleth". Ridiculous. Here the band started their journey to the europop stardom, as these are filthy techno-trance-rave versions of two of the most beautiful songs ever. It's a shame. Maybe Musique fans will enjoy... "Decades" is a Joy Division cover. Interesting, and only that, for it's a boring +6min old goth-psychedelic tune.

Overall, a bizarre compilation of one great song, one different but good song, one translated great song and three bad jokes... Hail great old Theatre Of Tragedy!

no, i certainly do not think that the entire cd is worth listening to. the last 3 tracks i honestly think i've listened to once. however, "a rose for the dead" and "as the shadows dance" (alongside "dying-i only feel apathy" from their debut disc) are by far the songs from their pre-"Musique" era i've listened to and love the most.

i thank the band immensely for doing an english version of "der tanz der schatten" off Velvet Darkness They Fear...it is certainly one of my favorite all time goth-metal love songs. the constant duality of emotions by both singers is displayed with such grace and done as if the song were part of the band members' inner beings.

the title track "a rose for the dead" was the first ToT song i'd ever heard, and is originally what made me fall in love with the haunting, grand, yet oddly minimal amount of sound they use to create the traditional gothic ideas of love and death in music/literature.

the 2nd track is also a lovely song...however...until i either learn german or the song is redone in english, i may only love it in passing. feel free to ignore the last 3 songs, unless you enjoy techno/rave oriented remixes (i.e. destruction of good songs for club use) of gothmetal era Theatre of Tragedy.

The remastering of the original songs is superb. The song "A Rose for the Dead" is classic ToT. The remixes by DasIch are awesome when played at max volume. Worth the money at twice the price.
