4.0 out of 5 stars Captures the essence and mood of Faulkner's story, great companion piece for study of story, June 19, 2011

This review is from: A Rose for Emily (DVD)
If you look at reviews from other sites online, you will see that there is a great disparity between loving and hating this short film based on one of Faulkner's most recognizable short stories. My thinking is that you're probably in a no-win situation if you try to adapt a Faulkner short story or novel to film. There are many subtleties and nuances that film cannot capture in Faulkner's setting, focus, or telling of stories. That being said, Lyndon Chubbock does a fairly good job illustrating the Gothic, unsettling, madness that this short story evokes, and the declination of aristocracy in one Southern family. One problem transferring "A Rose for Emily" to film is the accountability in time, and another is the accuracy of mood. When reading this story, we are hit with quite a punch in the gut at the resolution, and its impact really takes awhile to digest. This is hard to duplicate in film. In the film, there are indications of where the conclusion is headed (as Miss Emily's isolation and madness become apparent), and so, while it has some shock, it isn't nearly as powerful as the story.

Still, in the short time of the film (27 minutes), quite a bit is captured. Angelica Houston succeeds in capturing the essence of Miss Emily's deteriorating mental state and John Housemen does a solid job with the "voice over" narration of the story. There is a dark, dreary atmosphere in the film that parallels with the story.

Honestly, it is fantastic to see this short story brought to life, despite some of its minor flaws (a few discrepancies in the story). This film could be used as a great resource or companion piece for teachers who want to help students visualize "A Rose for Emily" and its complexities. Over all, this story captures the essential aspects and pieces of the story.

The quality of the film is also fairly good.

One of my biggest beefs is the price, which is a tad pricey for what you get. Hopefully this will be reduced.

Faulkner fans should definitely consider checking this one out.
