Review

Five Star Review:  A strong choice for metaphysical readers.  Nancy Lee Canfield states how parapsychology has led her to come to understand her mother and her own turbulent life.
--MIDWEST BOOK REVIEW:  By Paul T. Vogel

Even if the readeris not a believer in parapsychology and the secret forces around us, the book does make one a believer in the forces within us, and the perseverance we all need. She is not a bad role model. --JOPLIN INDEPENDENT:  By Jack L. Kennedy

Canfield's story is an incredible account of childhood neglect and her power to triumph in a life riddled with obstacles. An inspirational, unsentimental tale of overcoming the odds.  - KIRKUS REVIEW  .     .

Five Star Review:  A touching memoir, A Rose for My Mother is an engaging, uplifting read. An encouraging reminder that the greatest blessings always await those who refuse to give up...   --OFFICIAL APEX REVIEW : By Karynda Lewis

I cannot begin to describe how much I really enjoyed A Rose for My Mother. Anyone who enjoys Dickens will love this autobiography
(and I'm not an autobiography fan). --    THE READING CAN: By Tabitha Holmes

From the Author

I went through some trying times in my life. I realized that my story may help others believe in themselves and that their  - hopes and wishes can come true. My story gives a message to the young adults of today that their struggles may not be unique to them; their parents and grandparents may know what they are going through, becuase they may have faced the same struggles themselves.  A Rose for My Mother is a very emotional story that tells how I found the inner strength to deal with the obsticles, frustrations, and disappointments in my life, giving the message  that - we are never truly alone.

More About the Author

I am honored to have received the "Women of the Year 2010/2011" award from the National Association of Professional Women. And, proud that my memoir, A Rose for My Mother, has received the "Editor's Choice" award from the editorial board at iUniverse, Inc. My life long study of the paranormal has led me to become an expert in the field of parapsychology. With the belief that Higher Sensory Perception can be developed by anyone, I devoted my life to teaching, speaking and writing on topics of self-empowerment. Over the past 72 years I have moved many times since my birth in Buffalo, New York. Today, I divide my time between the north and the south; in the summer, I enjoy the beauty of nature at my cabin in the Adirondack Mountains, and in the winter I delight in the warm breeze that come from the Gulf of Mexico. My life story gives evidence that hopes and wishes can come true.

I just completed the book, A Rose for my Mother. The Author, Nancy Lee Canfield, gives an insightful recount of her life, with such detail that I was actually quite amazed that she could paint the picture of her sequential life-events with such color. Nancy doesn't hold back on the emotional and traumatic details of her life, and just when it seems as if the pain is going to continue, she steps off that road and starts a new one, and keeps her life focused on what SHE wants to accomplish. In the end, she is a walking success story. Nancy also introduces the reader to her "other" life, of paranormal perceptions. She fits this into the story-line with no grandiose build-up, just says it like it happened, and leaves it up to the reader to decide for themselves about the veracity of her perceptions. Quite in fact, she makes it seem so normal that it eases the subject out of the paranormal and more towards reality. A good read.

In A Rose for My Mother, Nancy Lee Canfield takes us through her difficult childhood as her parents fought poverty in the 1930's-1950's, and struggled to keep the family together. Being in and out of foster care over the course of several years as her family tried to get back on its feet, exposed Nancy Lee to some less than loving situations. All during this time, Nancy Lee experienced some paranormal things that had people labeling her as "spooky." It wasn't until later in life that Nancy Lee gained a deeper understanding of what her experiences, paranormal and other, actually meant to who she was as a person.

The summary of this book states that it is "An extraordinary true story of how a girl's turbulent childhood shaped and prepared her for a lifetime of studying and researching paranormal phenomena."

This story was a first hand account of the author's early life and struggles during a historic period of war and poverty. It was a real insight as to how families dealt with certain circumstances during that era. The paranormal activities mentioned by the author throughout her childhood were presented as a few odd happenings, and only one stood out as disturbing. I feel that the author must have had more experiences that forged her later life desire to learn and do more in the field than the few that were mentioned in the first 200 pages of the book, but they were not brought to light. However, she shows how one girl survives the daily assaults on feminism, her body, and her emotions while trying to become a woman, and the difficult decisions that have to be made in order to survive the times.

In the last 100 pages, or so, the reader finally gets to the meat of the paranormal which Nancy Lee has involved herself with.

Do you believe in the paranormal? Do you think some people are more 'sensitive' than others?
I have absolutely no experience with the paranormal. I've never seen anything or heard anything that lets me know beyond a shadow of a doubt that it exits. However that doesn't stop me from being fascinated on the subject. That is one of the reasons I decided to read this book. However this book is much more than a woman's experience with the paranormal. This book is about a woman's survival. There were parts of this memoir that are heart wrenching. Literally. Sometimes it was very hard to read. But if Nancy Lee Canfield can live through her experiences, I should be able to read about them. She lays her story all on the table for us. The good, the bad and the ugly. She starts with her earliest memories of her childhood and takes us through to her adult hood. She has included details that I'm sure were hard for her to write about. Nancy Lee Canfiield survived by strength, faith and persevering. She also documents her earliest paranormal experiences and how she became attuned to the paranormal world. I found this entire book interesting. I am thankful to Nancy Lee Canfield for sharing her experiences and wisdom with the world.

This is a book you will read at a fast pace because you will want to know what happens next. It is a story that reflects how sad and lonely the lives of parents and children can be when separated by unpredictable circumstances. Nancy was a child who survived not only that, but the confusion of early paranormal realizations without the help of an understanding adult. But survive she did. She had a father who was always on her side, and who tried to be there when she needed him. She had a mother who was overwhelmed by a life that threw her too many curves. When life closed in too far on Nancy, she disappeared within herself, blocking out those around her until love found her again. Buy this book to see how faith was the answer all along. Read "A Rose For My Mother"...... Worthy of 5 stars......
