BODYGUARDS,
By Sesho "www.sesho.libsyn.com" (Pasadena, TX USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Rose Hip Zero, Vol. 2 (Paperback)
Kido and Kasumi are enlisted as bodyguards for Assistant Comissioner Tokita of the Japanese Police Force. When Tokita sees Kasumi he instantly has a flashback to 35 years ago when he was a young cop. He was called in to a crime scene at an scientific complex that was conducting genetic experiments on humans. What the police found there was 120 dead researchers, apparently all killed by the results of their experimentation, ONE girl wielding a katana. The girl, incidentally, looked like the twin of Kasumi. Her codename? Ein. There seems to be some connection between ALICE and these long ago experiments and ALICE wants to wipe out anyone with any information about the project. So some of Kasumi's former friends are sent out to kill Tokita and anyone that gets in their way, even Kasumi.
Fujisawa seems to have learned a lot from Hollywood action movies as he brillantly orchestrates flowing action, excitement, and suspense in this second volume of Rose Hip Zero. The art is crisp, detailed, and beautiful, even though the character designs are lacking and can seem repetitive. The flashbacks serve to deepen the story well even as Fujisawa continues to pour on bits of humor such as when a former co-worker makes a giant chocolate Desert Eagle pistol for Kido which proceeds to melt into all sorts of phallic shapes. A great action read. |
