That's all it took for me. I saw Rose open for the Indigo Girls and, while I shamefully admit I usually don't pay much attention to openers, she captivated me. She writes beautifully, and her vocals are surprising and soulful. I can't quite describe how spell-binding she is...
If you like thoughtful folkish type stuff, a little punk, maybe even rockin' bluegrass, check this out. Its got it all. She claims no particular genre as of yet, but she is an inspired musician.
This album is her first that is backed by a full band. Probably her most accessable. But don't overlook the others once you're in love with this incredible artist. I can't wait to her more from her. Check out her website. And just listen...

I am extremely fussy about singer-songwriters (male and female), but I like Rose Polenzani's style. She can be dramatic without being melodramatic. She can be funny without being dopey. Her lyrics and music are sad without being whiny. She can also rock out pretty convincingly ("Polliwog's Lament").

I guess that I am removing a star (reluctantly) because at times her impressionistic lyrics seem to veer toward expressionismistic (i.e., only apparently meaningful), but hey sometimes words just sound good together (thinking of the llama song here, which begins with some nice harmonics).

Definitely go see her perform. Her inter-song monologues ramble enough to be fun without being self-indulgent. It makes you believe that she's got a lot on her mind that she'd like to share ... but not right now. Wait for the song.

Rose Polenzani's self titled album is without a doubt the most worthwhile purchase I've made this summer!!! Primarily accoustic yet musically inventive as well as lyrically insightful and poetic, Rose's well balanced sound is topped off by true vocal artistry. This album is full of her graceful sliding tones, thick with emotion and executed with honest clarity. I especially love track 2 "Whatever Remains," and track 6 "Sacramento Avenue." I am so impressed and pleased with this young but cultivated talent - this one's been in my stero on repeat for a week!
