Book Description

December 1, 1999
The city of Mera is a fortress hidden from the rest of humanity, a sanctuary for the diverse group of people rescued from death by the Oraclethat rules the city. The Oracle has brought together the citizens of Merafrom every land and every time period, protecting them from the ravages oftime, death and the evil demon forces that howl outside the city at night. All that the Oracle asks in return is a willingness to aid the rest of humanity, calling the citizens to go forth on various missions of rescue to mortals in need of aid. The Oracle sends Jerry out into the wilderness, accompanied by his ancient Greek friend, Killer, a world-famous lecher and juvenile delinquent with deadly combat skills. There they must rescue a woman named Ariadne, on the run with her children and seeking shelter. But children are not allowed in Mera, and Ariadne will not leave them, while Mera's evil demon enemies move closer and closer to Jerry's and Killer's temporary place of respite.

This review is from: A Rose-Red City (Paperback)
A Rose Red City is a standalone novel from the Master, Dave Duncan. I found it an excellent read; full of well developed characters and great adventure. It was the first of his books I read and led me eagerly on to his other works.

3.0 out of 5 stars Historically Interesting, April 26, 2000
A Rose Red City is a short but enjoyable book. As I recall -- and I admit that it's been a while since I read it -- the tale is one that centers around the "saving" of individuals, by offering them Greek-style immortality. This device allows for an examination of the differing attitudes and priorities of mortals vs. immortals; further, because "rescue" attempts ensure that immortals are temporarily rendered mortal, it allows us to see how they deal with vulnerability, and ultimately, being human.

I like all of Dave Duncan's books, but I think this is my favorite. I've had it for years and pull it out to read again every so often.

Jerry is such an average Joe that you wonder how he got into Mera in the first place. Then he has to handle such a series of characters that you can't imagine how he will pull it off.

I can't recommend it too highly.

JM
