William Makepeace Thackeray published The Rose and the Ring in 1855. He wrote it chiefly for the entertainment of his two daughters. In this burlesque fairy tale, Thackeray presents a royal family in which the prince and the princess have been lightly cursed by the Fairy Blackstick to have “a little misfortune.” Prince Giglio has to fight to regain his throne, while Princess Roslaba must work as a maid until her identity is revealed.

About the Author

Thackeray, an only child, was born in Calcutta. He studied at Cambridge, but, never a keen student, he left the University in 1830 to travel the continent. He began to study law but gave it up and squandered much of his inheritance on gambling and poor investments. He studied art in Paris, but he did not pursue that professionally either, except to illustrate his own novels. He was a successful novelist, earning the adulation of the very people he satirized. His death at 53 was unexpected. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

1.0 out of 5 stars A great story, but a fraudulent edition, June 17, 2003
By
This review is from: Rose and the Ring, The (Hardcover)
The Rose and the Ring is a great classic. This edition, however, is an outright fraud. The original has rhyming couplets across the page tops, this edition omits them. The original has illustrations by Thackeray, who originally intended to pursue a career as an illustrator, but this edition omits them. It's like printing an Alice in Wonderland without the Tenniel drawings and with none of the songs. This edition is a waste of paper. Shame on Amazon for selling it! Now I have to return to the search for a real printing...

5.0 out of 5 stars The Rose and The Ring, January 13, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: The Rose and the Ring (Hardcover)
This is a classic funny story that has stayed in my mind for 30 years. I first read it as a kid less than 10 and it was as wonderful and meaningful then as it is now.

The story of Giglio, Rosalba, Angelica and Bulbo casts a magic spell. Then of course there's Countess Gruffanuff.....

Classic's are classics with good reason.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great classic fairy tale, October 1, 2002

shiara the witch "Leah" (Marietta, GA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Rose and the Ring (Paperback)
This is a very funny and clever book that deals with the appeal and danger of beauty. It is a great book for all ages with some very well done illustrations through out the book. The bottom review is from the back of my copy of the book.

A magic rose and ring which make those in the possession of them attractive, togather with a mischiviouse fairy who adds, "a little misfurtone" to the lives of a prince and a princess, creat hilariouse complications on a unusual fairy story.
