5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Russell CD Yet! January 10, 1999
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
No one can write, and sing like Tom Russell. And he proves it, more than ever, in The Rose Of San Jaoquin. I haven't been able to stop playing it since the first time I opened it. A Must!Jay MarvinKHOW Radioauthor of Punk Blood

This album is one of the best of a whole series of great albums he has recorded. His song writing is wonderful and his performances are first rate. My wife says his voice reminds her of a young Johnny Cash.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Marvelous group of songs and musical poetry December 19, 2003
Format:Audio CD
I am on my second tape of this! 3 songs stand out especially: The title song 'Rose of the San Joaquin' will take your breath away,"Somebody's Husband, somebody's son" is just exquisite, absolute ear candy delivered as only Tom Russell can, and the achingly beautiful "Tramps & Hawkers" will have you listening again and again. The rocking "Out in California" moves at a pace that will wake the dead. My personal favorite is "Sky above, Mud Below", a Blue Roan horse lovers delight of a story song. A lot less Volver-volver would have suited me, but all in all if you like Tom Russell you have to own this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great, as usual! September 12, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I really like the song "Hand Carved Heart". Tom Russell can create stories such as "The Sky Above, The Mud Below" with just a little item such as a horsehair bridle.
