Roseanne Barr Pentland Arnold Thomas: Part 1,
By Tameron Cantrell (Nassau, The Bahamas) - See all my reviews
This review is from: My Life as a Woman (Hardcover)
I made the mistake of reading Roseanne Barr's second book "My Lives" before reading this one. However, it made me stick to my belief that Roseanne Barr and Roseanne Arnold are two very different people. Roseanne Barr (who wrote this book) mentions nothing of what an awful marriage she had with "Roseanne" crewmember Bill Pentland until her second book, which discusses how wonderful her second husband Tom Arnold was. Ironically, she divorced Tom Arnold that same year for domestic violence. The Roseanne Barr that wrote "Roseanne: My Life as a Woman" basically talks about her journey from a Jewish girl in Salt Lake City to stand up comedy. She doesn't deeply go into her problems on the set of the 1988 hit sitcom "Roseanne", but this book still may be worth your time. Keep in mind that when this book was written, she had not yet begun to recall her so-called memories of being molested, and she was still part of the Barr family.Maybe it is a GOOD thing that I read "My Lives" first. She seemed like a much nicer person in "Roseanne: My Life as a Woman". Now when is 2004's Roseanne Barr going to release a book? Maybe her third one will show the world how she has mellowed with age.

This is not so much an autobiography as it is a collection of anecdotes. The book is kind of all over the place, much like Roseanne herself seems to be. But her voice comes through, and I enjoyed learning more about this interesting person.

I'm on page 175 of this 200 page book and I just got it yesterday. ITs a real quick read and if I had more time would have finished it in a few hours. I am a huge Roseanne fan and for 1 cent its worth the read, though parts of it are a little out of order and the tempo of the book jumps around. If half of what she claims happened in her life is true she definitely has the grounds to write a book! Her life story is surprising, interesting, and funny. She talks about her feelings on being a woman and her developing beliefs on feminism. Its a good book, especially for the price. Im not quite done with it yet, but she has no mentioned anything about her TV show yet, she is somewhere in the mid 80s discussing her stand-up comedy roots. We'll see where she ends it.

The quality of this book is as expected. I have always looked up to Roseanne and go back and realize how much of her REAL life story fits into the storyline of her tv sitcom and how wonderful of a person she truly is!

Roseanne's show was always interesting and great because it was real. We who have raised children could relate. Reading her bio I discovered a much more intelligent and interesting woman than I expected. Great read.

American woman,
This review is from: Roseanne: My Life As a Woman (Hardcover)
Roseanne's first autobiography included the story of how she became national celebrity and standup comic. There were many pictures of Roseanne both older and newer included, as well. At the time of this book's publication there were many rumors and stories written about Roseanne which this book also does a good job in dispelling. Roseanne's writing can be described as almost crazed because she moves around in all different directions without having a central theme to it. Nevertheless I enjoyed the book because it was not just informative and interesting but also very funny in parts.

The book was good, but it fell apart as I was reading it--luckily I didn't care because I wasn't going to re-read it or pass it along.

This Book is Just a Mess,
By 70's Girl "Born to Talk" (Far From My Hometown) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Roseanne: My Life As a Woman (Hardcover)
It is hard to find words to describe this book. It was just so rambling and jumbled. It started out somewhat autobiographical, but turned into Roseanne's barely intelligible thoughts. (By the way, I'm scared to death of her after reading her books. I hope she doesn't read this and come kick my A**). She seems bent on pushing her political and social views. She is a hard core feminist and anti-Republican. She goes on and on about feminism, lesbianism, racism, classism. She considers herself a deep thinker (and maybe she is), but one can barely understand what she is writing.
The only thing that sticks out is that she was hit by a car as a teenager and suffered a bad head injury. It does seem like this is when she began to act out and have all kinds of mental problems. I think some of her problems may stem from a brain injury. It would explain a lot at least. Of course, she tells all her stories differently in the second book, so who really knows the real Roseanne story? I don't think Roseanne even does. Reading her two books will not help in any way. |
