A Brisk Romp,
By WrtnWrd "Hankman" (Northridge, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Rosebuds Make Out (Audio CD)
If you're in the market for a solid college rock band with crisp songs and a grasp of the verities (a working knowledge of Nuggets-era psychedelica, Beatles enthusiasm, the Velvet Underground songbook, Husker Dü light, The Go-Betweens' brevity, Pavement irony, straightforward not wimpy vocals), you might want to make the acquaintance of North Carolina's The Rosebuds. On their debut The Rosebuds Make Out, the trio establish a link to the past and a fresh voice simultaneously. Nothing groundbreaking, certainly, but a brisk romp nonetheless. Highlights include the galloping ballad ""Big Heartbreak", the homage "Drunkards Worst Nightmare", and "Kicks in the Schoolyard", a nostalgia piece that quotes the Smiths and doesn't live to regret it.
