This review is from: The Rosedale Diet (Hardcover)
I ate 6 months successfully according to the South Beach Diet (lost 10 kilograms and lots of fat), but suddenly I started to gain wait again, so I tried Phase 1 of Atkins, which worsened my situation; UNTIL I discovered and read the book of Rosedale; he explains why you should eat moderate quantities of protein (which I didn't do of course in Atkins Phase 1 ) ànd you should be careful with "normal" meat, because saturated fat cause a raise in leptin, which causes you to become fatter ànd you should eat LOTS of GOOD fats!! So I started to eat more fish, lots of olives and avocado's, lots of olive oil, nuts and less protein, and miracle oh miracle, I immediately lost fat and weight on the right places, WITHOUT any effort :-))
The key is leptin and Rosedale explain very well what leptin is, which type of food raises your leptin level, why that damages your health and even more important, he explains what you should and shouldn't eat in order to get your leptin in control again, with that comes weight and fat loss VERY EASILY

To Lose Weight, Eat More Good-Quality Fat . . .,
By
This review is from: The Rosedale Diet (Hardcover)
We all know people who seem to stay trim and fit on a high-carb, low-fat diet. But most of us also know folks who, no matter how hard they try, can't seem to make this "standard healthy diet" work. So they blame their weak willpower, or they throw up their hands and say they were born unlucky. If you're one of these, or you know someone who's in a losing battle against their appetite, this book is perfect. Ron Rosedale gives a clear-headed explanation about why . . . and how . . . changing to a diet that's low in starchy carbs and high in good-quality fats, can restore a body's natural ability to match appetite with energy needs, WITHOUT counting calories or exercising like mad. It may sound crazy, eating more fat to lose unwanted pounds and reverse disease, but read the book and see what you think. Considered one of the nation's deepest thinkers, when it comes to the links between nutrition and health, Dr. Rosedale gives clear explanations about why his dietary approach may help people get off of medications for high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease and depression, to name a few. There are plenty of recipes, plus an extensive reference section of scientific papers. This book is bound to be controversial, since it challenges standard dietary thinking, which is another reason that it's exciting to read.

A Godsend,
By Paula Roy "Paula" (Lewiston, Maine USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Rosedale Diet (Hardcover)
If you have tried every diet out there and have not been able to stick with it for more than a few days or even hours, then this book is for you. I have been overweight for most of my adult life. I have tried every diet out there, including the "healthy" Weight Watchers and the controversial Atkins. Except for Atkins, all of the diets I'd used before relied on 'healthy' carbs. Well, after reading this book, I understand just how bad whole wheat and supposedly good complex carbs can be for leptin resistant people. If you are obese, you're probably leptin resistant. Sooner or later, your willpower will weaken whenever you're feeding yourself the bad carbs, which include healthy grains. The Rosedale Diet is the first diet that I have been on for 8 solid days without cheating even one little bit. I have already lost 5 of the 50 excess pounds I'm lugging around. The reason, as Dr. Rosedale explains, is that I have become a fat burner, rather than a sugar burner. By following his diet, which allows you lots of high fiber carbs (unlike Atkins) and lots of good healthy fats and adequate proteins, you'll have your leptin (hormone) levels under control and becomne a fat burner too. Don't worry about the daily dose of cod liver oil. The first swallow of lemon flavored cod liver oil was surprisingly easy to get down. (modern methods have improved quality and storing it in the fridge prevents rancidity). I thank God that I'm finally going to be able to stick on this diet and rid myself of the ball and chain spelled F - A - T. Dr. Rosedale says that you'll feel so good you'll want to eat like this all the time as he does. Praise God for answering prayer!

A Miracle,
By Leelioux (Boston, MA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Rosedale Diet (Hardcover)
My mother sent me this book and I received it 2 weeks ago. I began the plan last Friday and have lost 8lbs in the first week. I have a long way to go, but my constant hunger is GONE. I don't think about food 24/7, and when I eat, it doesn't take much to satisfy me and I just stop when I reach that point. This plan is so easy, and I don't have to cut out my favorite foods, so I know this is something that I'll stick to for the rest of my life. I feel like for the first time in my life, food has no power over me anymore. I realized yesterday that I haven't had chocolate in a week, but more astounding to me, I haven't THOUGHT about chocolate in a week! Coming from a chocoholic, that's pretty incredible. I feel great, have plenty of energy, and didn't go through any "withdrawls" like I used ot when I'd do just a low-carb diet. I recommend this to anyone who has struggled with their weight and has tried everything else. This really does work. Thank you Dr. Rosedale! My mother put it best - Why didn't anyone write this book 30 years ago?

Great help for PCOS,
By Jane Kimball (Portland, OR USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Rosedale Diet (Hardcover)
I am 32 and have PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) and had all of the symptoms associated with the disorder: infertility, facial hair, loss of scalp hair, skin tags, and dark patches of skin on the back of my neck. Although I had not been diagnosed with diabetes, I had a HUGE (50+"), ever expanding waistline, and my flasting blood sugar was regularly in the high 90s. After 4 months on the Rosedale diet (and I am sticking to Phase 1) my beard has all but vanished, most of my skin tags are gone, my proportions are no longer so freakish, and I started menstruating again after 6 YEARS of not having a period. My obgyn had told me that I would never be fertile after having gone so long without menstruating. I am going to wait another 6 months to allow my body to continue healing, and then I'm going to prove my obgyn wrong. This book should be required reading for all medical professionals. Thanks, Dr. Rosedale, I only wish I'd learned of you when I was 25!!

Finally in control of my life,
By Cindy H. (Florida) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Rosedale Diet (Hardcover)
I waited to add my review of `The Rosedale Diet' until I had some happy results to support it. Well I have achieved my first weight loss goal of -20lbs (20% of total) following this diet. I have tried just about every diet out there, and yes this diet is similar to the Adkins diet. However, whereas the Adkins diet was formulated as a diet, the Rosedale diet is so much more.
Dr. Rosedale formulated his diet plan for his patients, those with diabetes and heart ailments, to improve their health and longevity. Losing weight was just a side effect. So my original reason for buying this book was because diabetes runs in my family and I was guaranteed to be one myself. Although this is a low-carb diet, it differs from the Adkins diet as it is low protein and low saturated fat also. Excess protein is converted to sugar which will slow your weight loss and saturated fat will cause leptin resistance, a necessary hormone that will suppress your appetite when you are overweight. One side effect of the Adkins diet for me was low energy, sluggish thinking and upset stomach. This was caused by the higher protein intake. On the Rosedale diet, I have lost on average, one pound a day and have not hit a plateau, a first for me. I do relax a bit on weekends, enjoying a small carb meal when eating out, so I usually break even come Monday morning weigh in. This is fine with me as it still results in a 3 - 4 pound weight loss during the week. Also this is no longer a diet for me, but a way of life. Not only have I lost weight, but am no longer stiff when getting up after sitting or laying down for a period of time. I have good energy and feel alert. For the first time in my 40 years, I feel in control of my diet and health. Thank-you Dr. Rosedale for changing my life.

FINALLY off the rollercoaster!,

This review is from: The Rosedale Diet (Hardcover)
Since I was a child I've struggled with weight. Several times I've met my "goal" weight only to regain even more weight over time. In recent years I moved from being overweight to morbid obesity. I've now lost 48 pounds and I feel better than ever. I'm not even tempted to "cheat" and I don't feel like I'm anxiously "clawing" my way to health. This is not a grin it and bear it approach to health. This is a live it and love it approach to health. Dr. Ron Rosedale has inspired in me a new courage that has not only revolutionized my health but my self-esteem, optimism, and vitality both at work and at play.

Blood Sugar, Not Cholesterol Linked To Heart Disease,
By Jimmy Moore "Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Man" (Spartanburg, SC USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Rosedale Diet (Hardcover)
Dr. Ron Rosedale, a nationally known and respected expert on nutrition and health especially in regards to diabetes, has penned an article at Mercola.com which claims a person's blood sugar and not his cholesterol make him more likely to develop heart disease. This is groundbreaking material if you will examine this data he presents for yourself and should be on the front page of every newspaper, magazine and web site in the United States!
Dr. Rosedale has already written a book entitled The Rosedale Diet which advocates healthy low-carb eating with vitamin supplements and no prescription drugs to eliminate the need for insulin and to help prevent or significantly reduce the chances for heart disease. In his article, "Cholesterol is NOT the Cause of Heart Disease," Dr. Rosedale states the longstanding notion that high cholesterol plays a role in heart disease is false. He explains that inflammation of the arteries can occur when cholesterol becomes oxidized and that the inflammation should be addressed, not the cholesterol itself. I love this analogy he used to make his point: "Using the same conventional medical thinking that is being used for cholesterol would lead one to believe that doctors should reduce the risk of Alzheimer's disease by taking out everybody's brain." Yep, that'll solve the problem with Alzheimer's, won't it?! I'll have to use this one sometime! Dr. Rosedale said the REAL cause of heart disease can be found in that innocent of all substances we consume on a daily basis -- SUGAR! He believes through his scientific studies that they "inflict on tissues, including the lining of arteries, causing chronic inflammation and resultant plaque." EWWW! He adds that this can cause some "cholesterol abnormalities" that make it appear than cholesterol is the culprit in the damage when in fact it is the sugar in the blood. Hmmmm. The focus on the total cholesterol number is useless, Dr. Rosedale asserts because so-called LDL "bad" cholesterol can still "squeeze between the cells lining the inside of the arteries." We've always been told to get our "bad" cholesterol number down so we don't clog our arteries. But Dr. Rosedale believes his studies have shown that "cholesterol does not cause heart disease, but improper metabolic signals including improper signals to cholesterol (causing it to oxidize) and perhaps to the liver that manufactures the cholesterol, will cause heart and vascular disease and hypertension." Therefore, we should be looking at other possible causes for heart disease other than cholesterol. Dr. Rosedale reveals that getting rid of cholesterol (which he describes as the "Darth Vader" of what most people consider good heart health) will not solve the problem with heart disease and other health problems. He is especially critical of "statin" drugs like Lipitor and Crestor as nothing more than a way for drug companies to fatten their pockets (to the tune of $26 billion!) at the expense of scaring the public into lowering their cholesterol. He backs up that claim with some interesting associations that may make you wonder. Always follow the money! Actually, Dr. Mercola said that lowering cholesterol "might not be as healthy as we are being told." "More and more studies are coming out showing just how unhealthy lowering cholesterol might be, particularly by the use of statin drugs. In particular, statin drugs have been shown to be harmful to muscles causing considerable damage. A common symptom of this damage is muscular aches and pains that many patients experience on cholesterol-lowering drugs, however most do not realize that these drugs are to blame." I used to take Lipitor and can attest that it caused so much pain in my joints that I had to stop taking it. I injured my thumb playing basketball because the muscles were so weak in that hand from taking the Lipitor. My chiropracter called it POISON and urged me to get off of it. So I did. I then turned to Crestor and did not have the same side effects. Maybe Dr. Mercola's findings will blow a hole wide open in this argument that we need "statin" drugs to be normal. What if it's all been a big lie?! But he doesn't stop there. Dr. Rosedale said LOW cholesterol can actually "worsen patients with congestive heart failure, a life-threatening condition where the heart becomes too weak to effectively pump blood." YIKES! "Statin drugs have been shown to also cause nerve damage and to greatly impair memory. One reason that statin drugs have these various serious side effects is that they work by inhibiting a vital enzyme that manufactures cholesterol in the liver. However, the same enzyme is used to manufacture coenzyme Q10, which is a biochemical needed to transfer energy from food to our cells to be used for the work of staying alive and healthy. Statin drugs are known to inhibit our very important production of coenzyme Q10. Importantly, while many cardiologists insist that lowering cholesterol is correlated with a reduction in the risk of heart attacks; few can say that there is a reduction in the risk of mortality (death). That has been much harder to show. In other words it has never been conclusively shown that lowering cholesterol saves lives. In fact, several large studies have shown that lowering cholesterol into the range currently recommended is correlated with an increased risk of dying, especially of cancer." Now doesn't that throw a monkey wrench into everything you've ever known about cholesterol! So what are we supposed to believe? Is cholesterol good for us or not? Dr. Rosedale said there's no such thing as "good" and "bad" cholesterol because it's all "just cholesterol" which is carried through the blood. In making his point, Dr. Rosedale presents another great analogy for people to understand what he is saying: "There may be a weak correlation of elevated cholesterol with heart attacks, however this does not mean it is the cholesterol that caused the heart attack. Certainly gray hair is correlated with getting older; however one could hardly say that the gray hair caused one to get old. Using hair dye to reduce the gray hair would not really make you any younger. Neither it appears would just lowering your cholesterol. Excellent! We automatically assume high cholesterol causes heart attacks, but why? Did one cause the other or is that what we assume because that's what we've always been told? Maybe Dr. Rosedale is on to something here we need to examine a bit further. In fact, Dr. Rosedale goes so far as to describe cholesterol as the body's "hero" because it helps "to keep your cell membranes from falling apart" as a kind of cell "superglue." "It is a necessary ingredient in any sort of cellular repair. The coronary disease associated with heart attacks is now known to be caused from damage to the lining of those arteries. That damage causes inflammation. The coronary disease that causes heart attacks is now considered to be caused mostly from chronic inflammation." So it appears we've been lied to all these years when we've been told that cholesterol causes heart disease. Instead, it's the inflammation that causes the problems as the body attempts to repair the damage to the lining of the arteries. Rather than taking highly expensive "statin" drugs, Dr. Rosedale said you can take an aspirin, vitamin E and fish oil supplments, and make certain dietary changes to reverse the inflammation and prevent the heart problems from occuring. Finally, on the subject of triglycerides, Dr. Rosedale said they are nothing more than the fat that flows through the bloodstream. If your body is producing too much fat that isn't being burned off for energy, then your triglycerides will go up and "this indeed is a major problem." "The inability to burn fat underlies virtually all of the chronic diseases of aging, and in fact may contribute to the rate of aging itself. As such, one might think that the control [of] all fat burning and storage might be very important in heart disease, and the other diseases of aging such as diabetes, obesity, osteoporosis, and even cancer. Indeed, this appears to very much be the case." And guess what kind of eating plan gets your body into fat-burning mode the best. It's livin' la vida low-carb, of course! And since sugar is such a problem when it comes to heart disease, the lack of it in your low-carb lifestyle means your heart will be healthy for a very long time. This is solid proof that the low-carb lifestyle really is the healthy alternative to low-fat I'm always hammering. THANK YOU, DR. ROSEDALE! You have done a great service for the low-carb community and for the sake of good health for anyone willing to heed your scientific advice! We should thank Dr. Rosedale for his thorough research on this important subject and to continue to stand strong in the face of strong opposition.

This review is from: The Rosedale Diet (Hardcover)
I too have been waiting for my long term results before writing, but I can wait no longer. My story: I have struggled with weight my whole adult life. About 5 years ago I reached 245 pounds and could not lose despite a 1200 cal low fat diet and a 4 mile jog each day. In desperation I tried Atkins and was able to lose 20 pounds, but then kind of plateaued. In the years hence, I have rocketed to 265 pounds, despite, for the most part, following the strict induction phase of Atkins diet, as well as exercising. I was fearful that I had screwed up my metabolism for good and was beginning to resign myself to being obese for the, most likely, "shortened" rest of my life. I came across the Rosedale Diet on Dr. Mercola's website and because the logic made sense to me and becasue I trusted Dr. Mercola, I decided to give it a try.
I have been stunned from the get go. First of all I am not hungry on this diet and I have been hungry my whole life. I find myself eating average to even small portions and realizing I can stop there and feel alright (this is a new and very rewarding feeling for me) Contrary to another reviewer's experience, I find the food to be wide in variety and very tasty, though it can be a little time consuming for some of the recipes. There are entrees like Garlic Shrimp, Black Bean Wrap, and Shepard's pie, certainly not bland diet fare. And like someone said, losing weight is a side effect as the diet is so healthy one would do good to stay on it for life. So far, in two months, I have lost 30 pounds, without even following the diet as closely as I should (way too many beers on the side). Still it has worked where nothing else would. And no, this is not Atkins as someone has alluded, where protein and saturated fat are unrestricted and vegetables are for the most part verboten. On Atkins it was a pound of hamburger meat and a salad drenched in bleu cheese (for a net 20 pound weight gain) with Rosedale it is Talapia with Red Pepper sauce and sauteed (in healthy oil)zucchini. a slice of Manna From Heaven bread and butter and a 30 pound loss in two months. If you are carbohydrate sensitive and willing to put a little effort into your health this surely worth a try.

This review is from: The Rosedale Diet (Hardcover)
This diet is not at all like the Atkins Diet. In fact, Dr. Rosedale warns against consuming saturated fats and strictly limits bacon, fatty red meats etc. So please don't pay attention to the reviewer who labeled it Atkinlike as they clearly did not read thru the book, let alone give it a fair try. The book does a marvelous job of telling us the pitfalls of consuming a high carbohydrate, high saturated fats and high protein. It is all about the right fats, balancing the hormones insulin and leptin, eating the right amount and kinds of protein and carbohydrates that produces weightloss in those who need it, reduces harmful triglycerides like no medication I have ever been on, lowers insulin to normal levels... in summary, to those of us who have these problems, this diet is no less than a life saver. A year after following this diet, not only have I lost weight, but more importantly I am off Lipitor, my blood sugar has stabilized and I am so grateful to Dr. Rosedale for his hard work and dedication that led to this book. It is a book you need to read, not just leaf thru... yes, there is work involved, purchasing and preparing whole foods, but its your life, isn't it worth it?
