The Making of Roseland

Biography

For nearly 25 years, Acoustic Alchemy has pushed the limits of the acoustic guitar’s potential by embracing a spectrum of musical styles ranging from straightahead jazz to folk to rock to world music and beyond. In the two and a half decades since their earliest recordings – despite a tragic setback in the late 1990s and the inherent challenges of the 21st century music industry ... Editorial Reviews

2011 album from the British contemporary instrumental/Smooth Jazz outfit. While they may call themselves Acoustic Alchemy, Greg Carmichael and his creative partner and co-pilot, Miles Gilderdale, exercise plenty of creative license by injecting generous elements of electric guitar into the mix on Roseland. This sonic edge comes courtesy of Gilderdale, who was an electric player first and foremost before joining the band after the death of co-founder Nick Webb in early 1998. Together, Carmichael and Gilderdale explore elements of jazz, rock, country and reggae - all of which makes for an album that's both eclectic and yet cohesive at the same time.

Customer Reviews

These are really good musicians, the quality of the recording is very good.

In my opinion, Beautiful Game is one of the best albums by A.A. & I think Roseland is slightly below that.

Roseland is a must to purchase if you are a fan of Acoustic Alchemy or new to the groups offering.

There's not another band comparable to this innovative, guitar-driven, melodically inspired ensemble. Co-founded by Greg Carmichael and Nick Webb, Acoustic Alchemy is now nearly 25 years and 20 albums deep, with ROSELAND as their first blossom on the newly formed Onside recording label, owned exclusively by Acoustic Alchemy (the 13-song project is licensed to Heads Up Intl). A true musical journey merging genres and musical influences , ROSELAND includes elements of rock, pop, country, folk, world and jazz. The first single, "Marrakesh," is a clear nod to C,S&Y and we're hearing an essence of the Beatles as well on "Templemeads" and "State of the Ark." Reggae and Latin ride high on the chilled "Ebor Sound System" and the Bossa, "Sand on Her Toes." Wow factors include the straight up, "Right Place - Wrong Time" and the humming Hammond of Ricky Peterson. Freedom to create without the pressures of time offered an environment for the writing team of Carmichael and Gilderdale to really sink in and sync up. ROSELAND is a defining moment in Acoustic Alchemy's stately career... welcome home!

It seems like the last few albums drifted a little too close to smooth jazz radio-friendly songs, where the focus was on "the band" and not on the guitars. I think "Roseland" is a little bit closer to the early Acoustic Alchemy stuff, where the songs are not overly complicated and the focus is squarely on the magic of two stellar musicians. So far, nothing on this album has really GRABBED me like some of their earlier singles, but there are no duds here either. Solid, thoroughly enjoyable release from one of my favorite artists!

I have been a fan of Acoustic Alchemy ever since 1986. I have enjoyed every single album. After waiting for Roseland to be released, and finally hearing their new album, I have to say that I love everyone of them. This is how Greg and Nick got popular, by creating great song that you can listen over and over and never getting bored of it. Roseland is a must to purchase if you are a fan of Acoustic Alchemy or new to the groups offering. You will not go wrong with this album.

Greg and the rest of Acoustic Alchemy, thank you for your hard work. This album is a great piece to my collection.

If you're an Acoustic Alchemy fan like me, you've waited patiently for their latest release, Roseland. It was worth the wait. It's a wonderful experience. If you're like me and prefer a bit more of the pre-1997 AA style and sound, you'll be pleased to hear that Greg and Company seem to have incorporated more of their trademark acoustic sound into their latest album. I think it's their best work since The Beautiful Game, released in 2000. I think that Roseland proves that Greg's vision of a new direction for Acoustic Alchemy is in full bloom. Input from the group members in writing new songs has proven to be an exciting and dynamic style, and I believe Nick Webb would be very pleased with the results. Thanks guys for the music, it's one joy that makes life worth living.

There aren't many radio stations in my area that comes close to playing this type of music anymore. It's truly a shame. The only way I ever find out about any new music like this is on some internet station. That is how I found out about this CD. I'm a big fan of Acoustic Alchemy and I didn't even know that the CD had been dropped already. Not a disappointment! I can listen to the whole CD from beginning to end without any regrets. My favorite track is usually found on track 5 for some reason. It is a good one but my favorite on this CD is track 3 (Templemeads) It has Awards written all over it.

I will recommend this CD to any one who enjoys a great collaboration of some fine acoustic (and electric) instruments with some very talented musicians. You can tell that they had fun recording this one!!!

The score is mainly due to personal tastes. I didn't really like all the tracks. That being said, if you are a fan or like their work, you will definitely like this CD. I recommend using the internet to listen to the tracks and then purchasing if you like em.

Roseland is my 13th AA album...and it's one of the best. This one nods in the direction of the early days, when the music was simple and guitarists Miles and Greg truly strutted their (virtuoso) stuff. Of particular note (magic?) on Roseland is 'Templemeads' (cut 3), which is nearly anthemic in its appeal. Also great to listen to are 'Swamp Top' (cut 7) and 'Right Place, Wrong Time' (cut 12). These three are Roseland's "cream of the crop"...but there's not a clunker in the bunch!

What took them so long. Might be the greatest album so far. Great for on the road, reading and just quiet enjoyment. I use it as background music in therapy sessions and the feedback is always positive, even with my psychotic clients. Music is a soothing balm for the life we live. This is a must have album.

Marc
