Editorial Reviews

A compelling rock/ambient CD by film composer Tyler Bates and singer/songwriter Azam Ali Roseland is the union between virtuoso singer and songsmith Azam Ali (Niyaz, Vas) and accomplished film composer/producer Tyler Bates (300, Dawn of the Dead, Rob Zombie's Halloween). Juxtaposing ambient electronic textures with intoxicating vocal melodies and driving hypnotic rhythms, Roseland's music is the expression of a truly unique artistic collaboration. The two artists diverse backgrounds aided in creating this cd with it's lush atmospheric aural landscape comparable to watching a dark, insightful film in that it can stir many contradicting emotions like pain, bliss, sorrow, anger and surrender. While their music has been compared to Cocteau Twins, Siouxsie and the Banshees, meet Led Zeppelin, no likeness conveys the cinematic essence of Azam's haunting voice and evocative lyrics that reflect the sorrows of war, self-doubt, and the personal experiences and relationships which shape and mold our psyches. 1 Other Side Of Me 2 The Spill 3 Mothwings 4 Hollow Feel 5 Keep It Coming 6 Forty One Ways 7 Bitter Days 8 The Reaper's Crown 9 Believer 10 Light The Stars

5.0 out of 5 stars A remarkable departure, January 10, 2008

This is a wonderful album, and all the more remarkable if you know Azam Ali's other work (Vas, Niyaz, her own solo albums). An acclaimed world music singer, she shifts gears in a big way in this collaboration with Tyler Bates, the soundtrack composer of the movies 300 and various horror flicks. Azam morphs her usually pure and spiritual sounding voice to a style that is both edgy and very sexy. Combined with Bates' at times very heavy rock guitar and atmospheric sound textures, the end result often raises goosebumps and is never dull. What is a mystery to me is why, only a few months after being released, this CD is nowhere to be found; I was only able to get the album by downloading the tracks from an indie music site. This is well worth searching for, and hopefully it will be back in print.

5.0 out of 5 stars An all timer, September 7, 2009
This review is from: Roseland featuring Tyler Bates and Azam Ali (Audio CD)
This album is excellent. It is one of my all time favorite albums. I got it back more than a year ago and still listen to it on a regular basis.
The album encompasses many genres in it. It is most common referred to as a rock-new age crossover (or darkwave of sorts), but it is really not just simple as that (some tracks border on alternative, while others - ambient).
The songs are like different moods and are designed to bring out emotion regardless of your perception of the lyrics; which are themselves true poetry. There are many ways in which one song may affect you. Truly masterful.
Tyler Bates' experience as a film score composer brings something that is rarely on the market. Azam Ali ingeniously achieves personality in her lyrics, which may be interpreted in many ways left to the listener.
Sadly, the album is a rare find nowdays, but is well worth buying if you find it somewhere.
