Editorial Reviews

Video Description

From KIDS FIRST!: Rosemary Wells knows kids, and it shows. This collection of stories captures the innocence of childhood, highlighting rites of passage, holiday celebrations, and mini lessons. The two-DVD-collection includes eight stories in English and Spanish. The animations are simple and appealing with simple, bold lines and vibrant colors. Each story is relatively short, making it perfect for just before bed or a nap. It’s also a great set for holidays and special events since it contains Easter stories, Christmas stories, and school stories. Child Juror Comments: I liked the pictures. They looked good. I do things like Max like the Easter bunny hunt. Ruby reacted like I would have when he ate the chocolate chicken. She yelled. My friends would like this because it’s funny. They like the books, and now the books are on TV. My favorite part was when the person who cared won. Ages 2-5.

1.0 out of 5 stars Misleading!, April 5, 2011
By
This review is from: The Rosemary Wells Collection (Scholastic Storybook Treasures) (DVD)
When I purchased this DVD, I expected the Max and Ruby that we see on NickJr. That is not at all what this DVD is! I was also mislead by the box, which stated that it was 169 minutes long. Well I suppose it may be that long, but it is not Max and Ruby cartoons. There are only three 10-minute Max and Ruby episodes on the first DVD. The 4th episode is some strange video about Otto the dog. It's about elections. Okay, so about the specific Max and Ruby episodes, they are narrated by someone who is nearly monotone. It is TERRIBLE!!! Also, it is a "read along" so the words are put up on the bottom of the screen and highlighted as they go along. The voices of Max and Ruby are just the voice of the narrator, which is again, terrible!!! This was a huge disappointment considering I was expecting what is on NickJr every day. Oh, the animation of the characters is also different. I guess it is a first DVD of Max and Ruby or something. That is what it seems to be.

Now for the second DVD that is included in this set. It has NO Max and Ruby in it at all! It is about other characters that no one has ever heard of. Again, the episodes are 10-minutes each, so it is very short! Big disappointment!

I forgot to mention above, what makes up the "169 minutes" of DVD is the four 10-minute episodes, followed by a repeat of one episode in Spanish, then there is a lengthy interview with Rosemary Wells. Seriously what toddler wants to watch a lady talk about how she came up with her ideas????? There is also a music video (no idea what that is since we never made it that far), and a read-along. I would not recommend this DVD set to anyone, ever!! Purchase the ones with the NickJr insignia on them instead!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Like this Max and Ruby version better than the Nick one., October 24, 2011
This review is from: The Rosemary Wells Collection (Scholastic Storybook Treasures) (DVD)
I actually like the version of Max and Ruby on this series better than the one on Nick. I would rather have the actor speak for them instead of the voices on the TV show. The characters seem more polite on this series than on the Nick version too. My 3 year old girl loves Max's Chocolate Chicken story the best.
Again, these are not the same exact stories as on Nick.

5.0 out of 5 stars Item is exactly as advertised, but it is NOT the Nick Jr Series, September 20, 2011

This review is from: The Rosemary Wells Collection (Scholastic Storybook Treasures) (DVD)
Unlike the other reviewer - I was not expecting the NickJr DVDs. This is the "Scholastic Storybook Treasures" collection that pre-dates the Nick Jr. series by several years. I remembered these episodes (aired on PBS) and have been waiting for them to come out on DVD for a while (they used to be available on VHS). These are not animated stories per se. They feature the original artwork of Rosemary Wells in the form of pictures (not animated). The NickJr series is not drawn by Mrs. Wells at all - though it is based on her characters. If you want to see the actual artwork from the books, with the stories read by a narrator - that is what you will get with this DVD set. The stories are the exact text from the books, read by a narrator with the original artwork showing on the screen. I don't think anywhere in the description there is any mention of NickJr. It is unfortunate that the other customer didn't realize what they were getting, but I didn't find the description to be misleading.
