Here she focuses on the evolution and maintenance of her own garden in Gloucestershire. This book is intimidating enough to make an ordinary gardener want to give up, but once you realize that Barnsley House represents the epitome of horticultural art, you can relax and enjoy the view. Verey spotlights the major components of her garden-knot garden, frog fountain, potager, "the wilderness," and more-in chapters brimming with glorious color photographs and notes on plant combinations. A final chapter on the garden year explains how the work gets done (and by whom!). Verey's is a very English garden, full of unusual plants that are unlikely to appear in most of the United States. Good design, however, is universal. Recommended for larger gardening collections.

After falling in love with Rosemary's Garden at Barnsley House, we returned wanting to know how it was created. This book captures her garden with wonderful photos and explanations of her whole approach to garden landscaping using materials she found near and far. The parterre kitchen garden and Yellow Laburnum walk are replicated in countless garden books, but the originals and plans are here!

I discovered this book in our local library and realized this was one I wanted for my personal library. It's a book that I'll read through over and over again. I also own all the P. Allen Smith books. Whenever the seasons change, I pull out my gardening books to get new ideas and be inspired all over again!
