This collection of early releases shows Nana's voice that captivated record producers in Paris and new york and led to her. Astounding success. I love listening to it while I exercise.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pure international gold! April 26, 2013
By David C
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Roses Blanches de Corfou is an impressive single-disc compilation of 28 songs performed by Greek-born Nana Mouskouri, the world's all time best-selling female recording artist. As evidenced on this disc, recently issued by the London-based Cherry Red Records, it is abundantly clear that even in the very early days of Nana's international career in the 1960s, she had a captivating voice and an obvious ability to charm her listeners. The melodies and lyrics presented on this album are a perfect mixture of romance, nostalgia, soulful discovery and joy. One need only listen to these songs from yesteryear to realize that Nana was without doubt a very special talent right from the start with a unique and utterly marvelous vocal styling.

It would be impossible for me to pick out a single favorite selection on this CD, so I will not attempt to do so. Among my favorites however are the jazzy, well-orchestrated Si tu m'aimes tant que ca (Quando quando quando) and the nostalgic Je reviendrai my love (Roses are red), both sung here in French, and most certainly, the hauntingly romantic German ballad, Was in Athen geschah (It happened in Athens). Also not to be missed are Nana's playful and utterly beguiling, hillbilly rendition of June Carter's upbeat Wildwood flower and her sensual (dare I say quasi-erotic?) version of Etta Jones' Don't go to strangers (both sung in impeccable English). Songs such as these exemplify how Mouskouri's eclectic and ever-expanding repertoire has long played an essential part in establishing her unparalled career.
