5.0 out of 5 stars Their Best Yet

If you've never heard ALO, this album is a good place to start. Whenever people ask me to describe the Animal Liberation Orchestra I inevitably choose from a list of other bands where they've drawn their influence, be it The Band, Paul Simon, their friend Jack Johnson, the Grateful Dead... but even a mash-up by all these artists won't describe their funky, mellow...

2.0 out of 5 stars 70's AM crap
After hearing "Fly between Falls" and being totally refreshed by it's happy hippie ethos, I eagerly rushed out and bought this.

I gave this time, hoping it would grow on me, but it hasn't. Read the other reviews, and check out the bands they say ALO reminds them of ... Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Loving Spoonful, and John Sebastian ... and as much as it...

5.0 out of 5 stars Their Best Yet, May 10, 2007
This review is from: Roses & Clover (Audio CD)

If you've never heard ALO, this album is a good place to start. Whenever people ask me to describe the Animal Liberation Orchestra I inevitably choose from a list of other bands where they've drawn their influence, be it The Band, Paul Simon, their friend Jack Johnson, the Grateful Dead... but even a mash-up by all these artists won't describe their funky, mellow sound. But this album does a great job of showcasing their musical chops, songwriting abilities, and occasionally silly lyrics.

To date ALO have recorded four albums, but only 2 that could be considered "major" albums (Fly Between Falls Fly Between Fallsand this one, Roses and Clover). I love Fly Between Falls, but this offering is head and shoulders above FBF. Roses and Clover is well produced, well recorded, and the fact that the album was createdin a single month rather than drawn out of multiple sessions comes through loud and clear -- a cohesive and consistent sound from start to finish.

I highly recommend this album!

5.0 out of 5 stars great, May 24, 2007
This review is from: Roses & Clover (Audio CD)
I bought this album as soon as I knew it was out, just 4 days before I was to see them in concert. I love their previous album, Fly Between Falls, and wasn't sure where they would go from there. To my great surprise this album is even funkier than the last, and yet it contains great mellow songs to balance it out wonderfully. I highly recommend both of their albums, its hard to determine which is the best. But overall, i suggest to go out and see these guys live, they play one hell of a show, and ive been to a lot of shows in my day. Peace and love

5.0 out of 5 stars ALO: Roses & Clover, February 8, 2009
This review is from: Roses & Clover (Audio CD)
I heard ALO live, opening for Michael Franti & Spearhead and immediately bought their CD. Zach has a mature wonderful singing voice. Their songs are well written and the studio recording on this CD is fantastic. It has been a long time since I heard music this refreshing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth Every Penny, June 30, 2008
This review is from: Roses & Clover (MP3 Download)
This ablum is by far, better than Fly Between Falls. If you like long guitar riffs, than this is the album for you. Dan Lebowitz doesn't let you down on this album, especially on Maria. Zach Gill continues his great lyrical work on this as well. I just recently saw Jack in Detroit and Zach was along side him, which left me wanting more, so I deceided to download this one, and is worth any penny. If you are looking for more ALO, check out Jack Johnson's and Friends DVD Live At The Greek, for some live ALO

This is an excellent well recorded album that reminds you of the Loving Spoonful, as its singer voice sounds like John Sebastian. It's a well crafted algum from start to finish that you can listen on and on without getting bored. The ALO - Animal Liberation Orchestra - is a jam band, but with the traits on this particular recording like Steely Dan. Give it a listen. I did. And I'm going out to purchase now their previous recordings!

5.0 out of 5 stars Stands up to repeated listening, June 22, 2007
This review is from: Roses & Clover (Audio CD)
I have been a fan of these guys for a long time. Mostly their live shows and live recordings. I am not a huge fan of any studio recordings in general for the simple reason that I cannot "feel" it as much as when the band is playing together.
However, this album goes to my top ten albums of all time, for anyone. Every song is a gem, I can listen to this album over and over and do not get sick of it. For me, no matter what the artist, that is a miracle.

I do agree that on the surface, this album is a bit more pop, but that is merely the surface. This album is pure magic. Super recommended.
Faves are Roses and Clover, Monday, and empty vessel.

Throughly enjoyed music and lyrics. Sounds like a cross between Five for Fighting and Grateful Dead.

Roses and Clover is the perfect follow-up album to Fly Between Falls. If you enjoyed the sound of that album, Roses will keep you satisfied. ALO is certainly a very likeable band with great musical talents and good lyrics. This disc will see some rotation in your player.
