"Few folk singers, even those from the original folk revival, have been able to combine social consciousness with musicality as well as Eliza Gilkyson. She merges strong songwriting talent with commanding vocals to create music that has immediate appeal as well as lasting intellectual impact." -- Vintage Guitar

This is a great CD release by the underrated talented traditional folk singer-songwriter Eliza Gilkyson, titled 'Roses At The End Of Time'. Eliza Gilkyson is a Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter & Austin Music Hall of Fame inductee. In this new CD (10 tracks) release, Eliza Gilkyson sings about life's struggles & triumphs producing great catchy acoustic ballads. The opening track "Blue Moon Night" : a great folk rock song with great guitar syncopation & vocals. Other great tracks include "Death In Arkansas" (a cover of her brother Tony Gilkyson featuring John Gorka and Lucy Kaplansky. The track has countryish folk sound with great violin/banjo combination & great vocals), "Looking For A Place" (folk rock sound with sad lyrics on being homeless), "Belle Of The Ball" (a great 'mellow' ballad, great personal/emotional lyrics & great vocals) & "2153" (up-tempo track, great guitar chords/violin combination & great vocals). Okay track is "Slouching Towards Betlehem" : folk/rock/countryish sound. Solid tracks/gems/stand-outs include "Roses At The End Of Time" (wonderful guitar string pickups, beautiful vocals & a great melody. A great choice for a title track of this great CD!), "Vayan Al Norte" (beautiful vocals & harmony. Lyrics in both English & Spanish), "Midnight On Raton" (wonderful violin & great melody) & "Once I Had A Home" (a slow track, incredible vocals, inspirational/emotional lyrics & melody). On overall, this is a fantastic CD release by the underrated folk singer-songwriter Eliza Gilkyson, a highly recommended CD listening. A well deserved 5 star performance!

Eliza Gilkyson
"Roses At The End Of Time"
(Red House, 2011)
-----------------------------------------------
As folk music stretches its elbows and becomes comfortable in the new media landscape -- where pop/rock and rap/R&B slowly teeter into the same sort of niche markets that folk and blues have been in for years -- singer/songwriter Eliza Gilkyson has taken on the stature not only of a folk-scene elder, but as a paradigm of what "Americana" music can and ought to be. This album opens with the evocative and elegant "Blue Moon Night," where Gilkyson muses, surprised, on the good things in life, on how sometimes we realize that things can actually be okay, and that life can feel blessed or even just in balance; one brief line about how we've had it good reflects, perhaps what many of her generation may feel, that an America in decline was still a great place to be. This album, however, is far less political than previous records, the sense of immediacy and anger that the Bush years brought having faded to bring about a more subtle form of dread. The introspective, personal narratives work better for her here, and the title song, "Roses At The End Of Time," is a gorgeous love song, built at first on well-known poetic and folk refrains, then launching into a richly original romantic metaphor. By comparison, topical songs such as "Slouching Towards Bethlehem" (about the financial crisis) and "Vayan Al Norte" (about immigrant labor) seem rather clumsy.

I honestly have loved all of Eliza's albums, and didn't know this new one was even coming out until recently. She has beautiful control and a voice that is earthly, sultry, and quixotic. It's pretty easy to close your eyes and imagine that she is singing to you personally. LOL! Well maybe I'm lost in fantasies. Anyway, I enjoy this album, and would have to listen to it at least a dozen times before I could rank it among her previous jewels.

Those who loved Jane Siberry's thoughtful music, will also love Eliza's brooding lyrics and folksy guitar. She will transport you away to a lazy afternoon on the porch, a rainy day, perhaps be your friend on a long car ride, or seranade you in front of a fire lit room on a lonely night.

I only discovered Eliza Gilkyson recently, but have been adding her music to my collection at a frantic pace ever since. Roses At the End of Time is a stunning addition. So many great songs. I cannot stop listening to Belle of the Ball; it is so beautiful and it conveys so perfectly the dreams and scattered recollections you have about a love one who has passed. I highly recommend the entire album.

Hey everybody...this is a no-brainer. Everything this amazing singer/songwriter does is a 5-Star effort. I don't know why this spectacular artist continues to fly under the radar when so many no-talent pretenders get so much unwarranted attention. Buy this CD - buy every Eliza CD - and discover the depth and breath of the greatest singer/songwriter/storyteller since Dylan. Her range will astound you, from sweet sentimental folk ballads to scathing political/social commentary.

I bought this for the song titled "2153" which never fails to amuse me. Ms Gilkyson is one of the best contemporary singer-songwriters.
