Product Description

War of the Roses: Kingmaker is a team based third person action game set in 15th century England. Two rival branches of the Royal House of Plantagenet - the house of Lancaster (the reds) and the house of York (the whites) – fight over the throne, and the player is thrown into the fray.

War of the Roses: Kingmaker arms players with a wide variety of arsenal and armor from the Knights Hospitaller, Gallowglass Mercenary, Winter Has Arrived, and Outside the Law updates. Three new maps and two additional gameplay modes, including the Assault mode released specifically for this version of the multiplayer action title are also included. War of the Roses: Kingmaker will separate the nobles from the rabble and put knights on the fast-track to glory, ready to fight and die for York or Lancaster – and go down in history as true heroes.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great idea, falls short. October 30, 2013

I've logged a lot of time with this game and at first I was really impressed. Beware there is a steep learning curve. It's not that bad if you've played games like Mount & Blade: Warband though. This game has great gameplay and the premise is top-notch. The problems stem from the developer making it free-to-play long after it's release. It's scared away a lot of the veterans because of a variety of problems. Firstly, there are tons of laggers in this game. It's not their fault most of the time because there just aren't enough servers available to international players. They end up joining US servers and essentially ruin many battles. It's very frustrating to lose a duel based on someone's connection (most servers don't have ping limits). The other problem is hacking is quite prevalent. Most hackers use a cheat engine to just speed up their play, which isn't too obvious to everyone unless they speed it up to an excessive amount. This completely ruins the balance of the game because there are plenty of penalties on heavy armor, heavier weapons, missed swings, etc. that can be avoided by speed hackers. This wouldn't be too much of a problem except for the fact that people who hack often never get banned. I've seen people with names that brag about hacking and these guys are often high levels. You can report them through Steam which I have done multiple times and I still see those same players later on. Even if they were to get banned they can just create another account and start over (free-to-play). The developers of this game failed to address these facts and have moved on to promoting a new game (War of the Viking) which is essentially the same game with a few tweaks. I cannot recommend this game even though it has been very fun at times. I hope the devs figure this stuff out in their future endeavors.

4.0 out of 5 stars Awesome February 28, 2014

Amazing historical accuracy that is unmatched in medieval warfare games today. The ranking system will make you want to fight until you have achieved a knighthood and the coat of arms system is really the best.

1.0 out of 5 stars Unbaslanced, not much to do September 22, 2013

Pretty boring game, multiplayer only. Multiplayer is terrible, the game is horribly imbalanced & the "look and feel" of the game isn't great, Mount & blade warband is a far better alternative.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good but not great August 22, 2013

Would be better if there was more to do, gameplay is fun though, and it runs rather smoothly for its age.
