Book Description

A breathtaking debut novel of love lost and found again that culminates in a stunning and unforgettable end.
From Morocco to Paris, Sera has traveled the world over but she never forgot Rosethorn, the beautiful, abandoned mansion where she and Andrew used to meet for trysts. Until the day Sera found her mother's diary. Her obsession with the shocking secrets it contained tore them apart and sent Sera fleeing to New York with a devastated heart.
10 years later, Sera revisits Rosethorn, only to run into Andrew, all grown up and handsomer than ever. Politeness gives way to a heated confrontation over their painful past. Yet unable to resist each other's lure, both surrender to the undying power of first love.
Fate has brought them together once again, but will an old tragedy destroy Sera and Andrew's second chance - forever?

Approx. 320 pages/101,000 words

She said nothing as Andrew walked towards her, unhurried, gleaming with sweat, disheveled and unreal. She saw at once that he had grown taller, if that was possible, and wondered if there existed in the world a pair of shoes with heels high enough so that she could one day be eye level with him.

It seemed an eternity that he walked toward her, silent as she was silent, with that steady gaze, head tilted slightly so that she saw the full measure of his deep blue eyes.

With all her power she tried to summon just an ounce of the cool and imperious demeanor she had perfected in college, fueling her courage with how she must appear to him, in her black dress and high heels, her sunglasses and hair upswept in an elegant chignon. She liked to think that her worldliness would have made her unrecognizable to anyone who knew her back in the day.

That Andrew had seen through it all was a fluke. In a moment she’ll realize how boorish he’s become, perhaps how boorish he had always been, and she will finally be rid of the past.

As he came closer to where she was still standing, unmoving, Sera noticed without wanting to that Andrew had finally grown into his body. He was lean and muscled, his bare chest reddened by the sun. The way he moved showed no trace of the gangly boy he had been. No longer self-conscious of his height, he strode with an economy of grace. He wore old blue jeans with dried paint splatters and a tool belt slung low on his hips, his long torso rising above it, reminding her of Bernini’s David released. A marble statue come to life.

She saw all this in a moment for suddenly he was standing two feet in front of her. It was hard for her to breathe.

This book had potential, BUT...
1. It was too long! There was wasted pages spent describing/detailing unimportant things.
2. It flipped from past to present without letting you know. It was difficult to follow and adjust. Also, it would flip from the mother (her journals) to the heroine.
3. So much of the book was the past and very little about the present. I wanted to read about Sera and Andrew finding their love again as the description suggests. It was not that way at all. You were basically reading about their teenage years and as a 37 year old woman, it was boring. I needed more of the present, as adults.
4. The ending was bad. It was not complete. An epilogue or something was needed. Seriously, I was frustrated. Give us something...marriage, living in their home where all their memories and dreams were from, etc.
5. The thing with Sera's grandmother, mother and father was not resolved. Does she go meet her father? Did she confront her grandmother? Did she tell Andrew all of this?
6. What happened with Chace? That was left hanging as well.
7. What happened with Andrew's ex and the implications of the message she left? That was left hanging too.

This book could have been really good, but it was all over the place and incomplete.

3.0 out of 5 stars Was overall a good read June 28, 2013

I enjoyed the book overall. There were some issues with me in how the book was laid out. Knowing whether it was Sera's past when she was young, a young adult or present got sometimes fuzzy since it felt like things jumped around a little too much. It did keep you on edge for figuring out how the story would play out and didn't see the conclusion of the book like I normally do so in that case the author did a good job.

There were many difficult topics discussed in this book so I would not recommend it for young adults. And if you have issues with young adults having adult types of relationships and facing adult decisions or morality questions, do not read this. I would hate for this author to get slammed because someone got offended when reading a romance novel.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good but Familiar June 25, 2013

All in all, I found this to be an enjoyable but sometimes slow read. So first, let's talk about the positives.

+I love the details of Sera's heritage that are woven into the novel. I admittedly know next to nothing about Filipino culture, and I think that Ava Zavora does a great job of educating the reader, without making it like a text book or history lesson, and without taking away from the main plots of the story.

+Jumping off of that, I appreciate that when a word wasn't in English, it was in italics. I've had issues with that in the past, and this approach was used well.

+Another thing that worked well in this novel was the use of flashback-like sequences to tell a broader story. In no part was I confused by the timeline or by what was going on.

+The settings and descriptions are both beautiful, making the reader want to travel alongside Sera and see what she wants to see. Even down to the colors of the flower petals, a vivid portrait is painted.

+I really like the concept of this book: secrets and lies run rampant. It makes for a dramatic, intense read that emotionally pulls at the reader. I was left questioning things and pondering characters' choices. I like a novel that isn't predictable.

There were only a few minor things that didn't rest so well with me. At parts, it seemed a little boring, almost as though I'd heard it before. This wasn't often, and not enough to "break" this story for me. Going off of that, this book slightly reminded me of Beautiful Creatures (a book that I couldn't even finish). The mansion, Rosethorn, along with a character named Serafina stirred up this novel, through no fault of the author or her story. This was merely my own skewed thinking.

Heart pounding romance meets and a spine tingling mystery.

The story was imaginative and the imagery was hauntingly beautiful. There was always a lot going on as the book switched from past to present, but the author did a great job of making a smooth transition so that there wasn't a lot of confusion while reading. The pacing of the book was nice and did a great job of providing you just enough information to give you some answers while not giving everything away.

The romance was sweet and I loved all of the banter between Sera and Andrew they are really perfect for each other. Even when things hit a rough patch you could tell they really cared for one another.

Sera was a wonderful woman and very courageous. I really liked getting to know more about her and seeing how things would turn out. She really went through a lot and I was glad that she got to see Andrew again.

Andrew is funny and so charming I couldn't help, but fall in love with him just as Sera had. Seeing him and Sera fall in love both in the past and the present was wonderful.

I cried, laughed, and smiled right along with the characters in this book. They are unforgettable and definitely left a mark on my heart.

For a sweet romance and a bit of mystery check out Rosethorn!
