Good program; Greedy company,
The Rosetta Stone Spanish program was a fairly good program, especially in light of the fact that we tried two other programs first but had no success with them. My daughter enjoyed the program and was able to complete it mostly on her own. (She is 17, an academic over-achiever and quick study.) After completing the first year only, the end result is she can recognize some words when hearing Spanish and could perhaps carry on a very limited conversation with a Spanish-speaking individual.
However, when I consider purchasing any type of curriculum, I must also consider the COST. Rosetta Stone is very costly! Other curriculum I have purchased has a resale value, meaning I can recoup some of my expenses by reselling the item when I am finished. The Rosetta Stone company has "forbidden" the reselling of their items. (Yes, there may be a legal way around it if you are willing and able to do your homework and fight, but the fact is that most of us don't have the time to do this and the company knows that.) Due to the COST and lack of resale value, I CANNOT with good conscience give this a 5-star rating.

Good, but not a complete program,

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
We've used both the Chinese and Spanish versions of Rosetta Stone. This program provides an easy way to engage in language learning, but it is not a complete course for the adult learner. The major deficiency is a complete absence of explicit instruction in sentence structure and grammar. The experience provided by Rosetta Stone is more akin to learning language on the street with a patient non-English-speaking friend, but no teacher. We use it for our younger children, for whom grammar is still something of a mystery anyway. Already knowing the languages, I can step in to help them out if they are confused. It works well in this context. Were I to try to learn a language with Rosetta Stone without a teacher to augment the experience, I think I might be very frustrated.
