As of the date of this initial review, I have been studying Chinese for two and a half years-- starting with Rosetta Stone Chinese, and studying levels 1-3 (Ver. 3) intermittently with my first year of college Chinese courses in the US and my second year of studying the language, which was immersion while working as a foreign teacher in an area of China that speaks a mandarin dialect. I've also completed levels 1-3 of RS Arabic and used RS French before the higher levels for that language were released.

To Rosetta Stone's credit, the software is a fabulous experiment in foreign language instruction. It has a unique methodology that aims at simulating immersion. Of course, in reality, immersion experiences are much more overwhelming in the amount of the language you simply do not know-- immersion experiences do not slowly build from one lesson to the next, but are much more "Everything all the time"-- so Rosetta Stone gives you the feeling of working only in the target language, but in a way that is constructive. This is particularly helpful in languages that don't use roman script, and RS Chinese is great because you can also choose to immerse in Chinese characters, or work with the pinyin as much as you choose.

Rosetta Stone's strength, across languages, is in understanding how to speak formally (and respectfully, to some extent), and to study grammar without complex grammar maps or formulas like you might see in a textbook. Rosetta Stone also teaches a fairly wide vocabulary-- I often complete lessons in Rosetta Stone and think that the lesson was overall not helpful, but that I benefited from a memorable introduction to some vocabulary or to a complex grammatical structure that I did not previously understand.

3.0 out of 5 stars Depending on what you need, RS can be useful December 25, 2012

I am fully bilingual in French/English and speak a bit of Spanish. Here is my opinion on Rosetta Stone - Mandarin:

I won't go too much into describing the software, as it has already been done by a lot of reviewers. Basically, RS teaches you by what they call "immersion method". You learn by analyzing pictures, recognizing objects and repeating words. As a result, you will not learn complete useful sentences until very far into the program. For instance, if you were to visit China at the end of the 2nd lesson, you might not be able to ask people for directions to your hotel or invite that pretty lady you met at the airport to have dinner with you at 9pm. However, RS will enable you to recognize that 'the policeman wearing a blue hat is reading a newspaper'.

You will certainly build a good vocabulary with RS, and the redundancy of the program will ensure that the words you learn stay in your memory for a long time. You will also be able to learn grammar and to build your own sentences. This is nice thing that most software out there cannot provide.

At the end of the day, depending on what you need, RS can be useful. If you are looking for a fast way to learn/memorize useful sentences or to hold simple conversations, RS may not be the way to go. But if you would like to learn the language more thoroughly, to be able to build your own sentences, and to hold higher level conversations, Rosetta Stone will definitely help. That being said, if you would like to be fluent in a language, you cannot just stick to one tool. A software like RS coupled with audio tapes (such as Pimsleur) and a Native tutor may be the perfect combo.

To add another level of information to the reviews already in place, I'm an American born Chinese who never really learned to speak Chinese as a child. I'm well familiar with the way the language is supposed to sound, and although I didn't grow up speaking or understanding, I did take a 1 year college course in Mandarin Chinese. For people like me, I think this product can be very beneficial, because the main thing that I was missing was vocabulary, grammar, and speed. I've made it through most of level 1 in about a month, and I'm already finding that I understand more particularly with respect to numbers, like when talking about time or money. With a little bit of extra knowledge occasionally obtained by using Google Translate, I've also been making good progress in sorting out the counting words (which are maddeningly complicated). Something about the picture matching approach is causing me to finally grasp certain simple concepts without having to translate to English, which is an exciting first for me.

On the down-sides, I am first and foremost concerned about the subscription approach to this software. I don't see any way I'm making it through 5 levels in under three months. Second, if you are hoping to learn how to read in Chinese, I don't believe this product will be effective. Third, there are some questions in the lessons, notably in the milestones, which I don't believe any normal person is going to get correct based on the information given. A certain amount of wrong-ness is to be expected when learning a language, so I suppose that one's not going to be a big deal.

Finally, to support what other reviewers have said, the speech recognition is not perfect.

Don't buy this, it's a subscription! If you're willing to pay $350.00 each year go for it, but it's really not worth it.
