5.0 out of 5 stars Great Language Learning Program
I just finished the first lesson, and I am now thrilled with what I bought. This program is easy to use, clear, and good for someone who has had trouble learning languages in the past; ie me. My thing is that it's difficult to hold my interest by using the tapes, or a book. When I tried to learn spanish in high school, well, let's just say that that did not go well...

2.0 out of 5 stars not all it is cracked up to be
OK, I'm on level 4, which is about 30 lessons into this program and I still can't ask you your name. I can tell if you are asking me if the bicycle is upside down, or if the clown is putting on his pants, or if kids are jumping off of a picnic table, but so far nothing useful.... a huge disappointment

I just finished the first lesson, and I am now thrilled with what I bought. This program is easy to use, clear, and good for someone who has had trouble learning languages in the past; ie me. My thing is that it's difficult to hold my interest by using the tapes, or a book. When I tried to learn spanish in high school, well, let's just say that that did not go well either. Ironic, considering I pick up computer languages easily. Anyway, the setup is easy, albeit time consuming. The interface is clear, simple, and easy to use. The truth is that it's a great program that I plan to use again with another language.

For the record, I bought the program because I am going to Brazil for a wedding and vacation. I'll update this comment after the trip, but at this point, I have a expect good things. I am looking to buy Spanish after this for a trip to Spain next year: economy willing.

One more thing, the headset with microphone works well, and sounds good.

This is a great language-learning tool: Easy to use courses, great audio approach and most of all really fun. It is what I was expecting from Rosetta Stone. I'm learning the language faster than I thought I would. Excellent product!

I thought very highly of Rosetta Stone when I used it about 10 years ago to help with Spanish, and have recommended it to a lot of people since then. Well the new version of RS that I recently picked up to study Portuguese is fantastic. They have improved it in every way, including how the program looks and runs, and the teaching content.

The speech recognition in particular works better than it did in the older version, and it is used in more of the activities. The headphones and mic supplied with Level 1 are a little on the small side for my big head, but are serviceable and work pretty well. (In the past I found the speech recognition was very sensitive to the type of mic that I used).

I really have no serious complaints at all, although I wouldn't recommend that anyone pick it up assuming that RS alone will make them a fluent speaker of a new language. I think anyone who is serious about learning a language should engage themselves in it in as many ways as possible, including as much practice with other speakers as can be managed. Rosetta Stone can be a very useful part of such a learning program.

This is a fantastic way to learn Portuguese. The format makes it easy to learn the language, and it's motivating so the user sticks with it. His Brazilian friends have been awed by how quickly and how well he was able to both speak to and understand them. He's been accepted into a 200 level Portuguese class as a college freshman (doesn't typically happen) because of Rosetta Stone.
