  • A challenging jigsaw puzzle of the artifact that unlocked the mysteries of a vanished civilization. The Rosetta Stone is one of The British Museum's best known exhibits. It was discovered in 1799, by which time all knowledge of the ancient Egyptian language and writing had been lost for over 1000 years; however the Greek inscription at the bottom helped scholars to decipher the two Egyptian scripts - one written with hieroglyphs and the other with cursive demotic script.

This jigsaw is absurdly hard (or perhaps fabulously hard if you know ancient languages). I have a feeling it will take me as long to finish it as it took the linguists to translate it. The pieces vary very little in subtle shades and textures of gray, and it seems that the only way to solve the interior of the puzzle is by learning to read the three ancient languages shown on it! The picture provided is partial and of little use. One thing that makes the puzzle immensely more difficult is that the pieces are all quite similar in shape, and it is unusually hard to tell when you have a good fit between pieces. Having completed the edge of the puzzle, which was challenging, but not absurd, my daughter and I are struggling to make any further headway, and we are fairly adept puzzlers. We've put a few pieces together, and every time we find a fit, we start cheering. It's that hard. I have never given up on a jigsaw in my life, but I'm really not sure I will master this one. I look at the sea of virtually identical pieces and I think "It's Greek to me!"
