As interesting and user friendly Rosetta Stone is, I don't think it really teaches anything other than basic social listening and speaking skills, and some reading at most.

If you're looking to travel the world, this may be a good tool to start, but if you're looking into studying abroad... I fear it won't teach you much of the academic language needed to succeed in such environments.

I never would have believed that you could actually learn a second language as fast as they claim until I bought Rosetta Stone....not only do you learn it fast, you retain it and do not forget it....it is fast and so easy to learn....my husband and I want to buy another language and master it as well, and who knows where that will lead, maybe we will learn them all...I absolutely recommend this item, not only do I recommend it, but I bought it as a gift for a friend of mine who is adopting from China...I want to learn that language as well, but my husband and I bought Italian for our trip to Italy.

The RosettaStone CD-Rom version 3: Chinese Level 1 is really excellent. I have used several other methods of learning Chinese, but none the incorporates that native speaker with images of what they are speaking of. This is a huge advantage over many of the other systems if you are a visual learner. I am a visual and auditory learner and therefore am helped tremendously by seeing the words and pictures coupled with the imagery chosen to represent what is being spoken of. It is also very easy to use, even for my five-year-old. I feel confident that I will have a much better handle on speaking and understanding the Mandarin Chinese language by next year when I travel there, thanks to this system. I highly recommend it.

I have tried several different programs and some of them were pretty helpful. However, none of them came close to the simplicity and convenience of Rosetta Stone's method(s) and technique(s). I highly recommend it if you want to learn a language quickly and long term.
