This review is from: Rosetta Stone V3: Japanese Level 3 with Audio Companion [OLD VERSION] (CD-ROM)
Disappointing and overrated. Yes, it drills you but gives no indication about social context, and in Japanese, a politeness language, different social situations determine what language forms you choose to use. MORE IMPORTANTLY, all of the picture are of European people so it feels, the entire time, that the language (spoken by native speakers) is disconnected or at odds with this visual stimulus. Pictures are meant to give the language learner important contextual information in which to enhance the understanding of the language and this is their claim. So it is an incredible oversight in my mind. Language learning, primarily, needs an authentic content.
I wrote a letter to Rosetta Stone about this and they didn't reply. On the positive side. It is fairly comprehensive but for the money, I would choose the Pimsleur any day. |
