5.0 out of 5 stars Go for the real thing
Ok i admit i tried everything else first. Pimsleur, books, other CD's . I even tried pirated Rosetta software - first as a gift and then by accident as i thought it was the real thing. Just forget all that, get the real Rosetta stone software. They have wonderful support services. When it had some trouble with installation they solved it right away, and when the...

3.0 out of 5 stars Not catching
I tried this, I have one big issue with the teaching method, or lack there of:

When it starts, it speaks the words to you, for you to repeat, but it shows the words in Russian lettering. As you progress through this first stage, they expect you to know how to say the word they show. The Russian alphabet may as well be an alien alphabet to me. There's no way I...

There's no way I could memorize how each word and foreign lettering was supposed to be pronounced. It was like trying to memorize a picture or pattern, and not actually reading it. I wish they had taught what sound was for each letter or letter combination. It just felt like taking a shot in the dark with each word and not really understanding anything.

I learned 3 words out of 20 in that first phase. It did not keep my interest or faith in it's abilities to actually teach.

On a funny note: My boyfriend is from Russia. He tried to do the lesson with me and on the parts where we had to speak the word to the computer, it continuously marked him as incorrect but would accept my chopped up attempts.

Just forget all that, get the real Rosetta stone software. They have wonderful support services. When it had some trouble with installation they solved it right away, and when the headphones did not work on one side they immediately replaced them. It is a great way to learn and i think it is fun. I find my mind keeps working on that Russian language as i sleep or go about my business.
