Great Enclosure!

This is a great aluminum enclosure for anyone looking to turn that old hard drive into an external drive. The installation was flawless with the exception that one of the rear screws would not screw in straight and I ended up stripping the screw. Upon further inspection it looks the hole was defective. I didn't dock it a star though because it is in the back so you won't see it and I was able to get it in far enough to secure the rear panel enough so it wouldn't affect anything. All and all I plan to buy more of these enclosures in the future.

Pros:
- Nice aluminum case
- Installation is fast and easy

Cons
- One of rear screws would not screw in straight I think the hole was defective.

This is a good quality case at an affordable price what more could you ask for?

*UPDATE*

I just wanted to update my review and add a couple things. First, I contacted Rosewill about the defective screw and they sent me a replacement with no hassle at all. I was beyond pleased with their customer service. They seem willing to go above and beyond to ensure their customers are satisfied with their products.

Also, I have been using this enclosure for a few weeks now and it is doing well. I read a couple reviews that said this enclosure can get hot, but mine is currently sitting at 29°C. That is only 7°C higher than my internal hard drive that is currently sitting at 22°C. That is far from hot for a hard drive. The hottest I have seen it is 41°C and that was when I was intentionally writing large files just to see how hot it would get. It depends on who you ask, but I still consider this acceptable (I usually worry when temperatures start exceeding 50°C). During normal use it usually stays around 35°C. All and all, this aluminum enclosure does well keeping the hard drive cool.

If I think of anything else I will be sure to add it. I hope this information helps!

I am a long time WD external loyal customer. Actually, I WAS a long time WD external loyal customer until I bought this to replace one. All kidding aside, WD support consists of minimum wage bit players replying to every e-mail with a script-like formula: it's broke, can't be fixed, send it to our data-retrieval affiliate along with a huge check to get your life back.

This is my experience three times over, and the final time I could take no more. I had a pretty tech-based childhood and it takes a lot to fool me thrice. When my WD external USB jack snapped off the circuit board, and I was told no replacement parts are sold, I began my research - looking for a new enclosure for the 1TB SATA HDD.

I learned a lot looking for a replacement, and it all culminated with finding this unit to fit all my design factors. I am attracted to the industrial appeal of some of their products, but I wasn't convinced they were optimal for heat dissipation. This unit is sleek, low-profile, form-fitting to the HDD for max heat transfer, and used a USB B data connector (much more hardy than the mini-a/mini-b connectors so popular these days). Above all, it was cheap. This is a recession, after all.

The install took all of 90 seconds, friction fit the HDD to the board, two screws to secure the HDD to the frame and four screws to close the case. With plug-and-play the device recognition took less than 10 seconds. I was transferring my large ISO files within two minutes of unpacking the drive. Despite my intensive use of the drive, and the length of time I leave it on, it stays VERY cool. Much cooler than the plastic WD enclosures I'm used to. Not cool to the touch, mind you. Does not dissipate heat well

As a case to store your hard drive, this thing is great. It is light, yet durable, and pretty simple to use. Installing the hard drive was very easy and I had no problems connecting it to the computer. On Egghead, 288 people gave is 4.5 stars (out of 5) so it must be great right? Well not if you like overheating your hard drives.

When I used the hard drive for a small file transfer I didn't have any problems with heat. However, if the file(s) is quite large and the transfer (via USB) takes over 30 minutes the casing gets extremely hot. Granted, the amount of heat generated also has to do with the type of hard drive. I had a Hitachi 7200 RPM 1 TB hard drive in mine and I recently took it out and moved it to a fan cooled enclosure. This particular hard drive will generate more heat than what you will normally find in a 'portable' hard drive, which is usually 5400 RPM. Still though, when you purchase an external hard drive it at least comes with vents to allow some sort of circulation. After transferring a large file set (20 GB) I noticed the casing was very hot so I decided to take the hard drive out and nearly burned myself on the hard drive removing it. Heat is the number one killer of hard drives and this thing was on fire.

So, if you are looking for a storage case for your hard drive or if you are only transferring small files infrequently then this case is what you want. Although I'm sure there are better storage devices out there if that's what you are looking for. I knew coming in that the enclosure didn't have a fan, but the product description states that the aluminum casing dissipates heat very well so I figured that's why it didn't have a fan/vent system. However, it wasn't able to remove heat from the system so I would steer clear of this enclosure if you want to use your hard drive for anything more than a minor drive.
