Wifi usb adapters have come a long way. Less finicky, plug n play, and outstanding range and security. This unit is very flexible and works great. It was a plug and play via Window 7. After that, I updated drivers via the internet. THis unit comes in (3) pieces. Antenna, wifi unit, and a usb dock/dongle. Attenna screws onto the wifi unit, wifi unit connects to the base via usb, base connects to computer via USB.

You can physically operate the unit in 3 ways:

1)Just the wifi adapter itself without the antenna or the cable/base. Of course the range won't be as good without the attenna. In this configuration you have the smallest footprint and works well if you need quick internet via netbook or laptop and don't need the long range.

2)Wifi unit with the antenna. This will give you optimum range. The antenna does swivel and tilt to give flexibility. Perfect for laptops.

3)All (3) pieces. This configuration allows you to move the attenna to a more ideal location indpendent of the your laptop or computer. Sometimes having the wifi behind a desktop does not allow for a good connection. In this configuration you can move the antenna base to a more ideal location like top of your desk ect.

I have used many wifi adapters from Netgear, Belkin, Linksys, ect. This one beats them hands down for much less money.
Plug and Play + rock solid connection + incredible range, all for twenty bucks = no brainer purchase.

I have a D-Link DIR-655 router, which had issues in the past with wireless. I had bought a DWA-130 USB wireless adapter 6 months ago to connect my desktop to the internet. The wireless would work fine for a while until later when the wireless would constantly connect and disconnect. Every time I rebooted the router, the wireless would play nice again and then start the whole thing over again. So I blamed the router. Even after the new firmware update for the router, which solved all issues for others, I still had issues. Then I turned to the modem. I thought the modem was timing out or something like that because even the wired computer was getting affected and the modem status page occasionally wouldn't load properly. Just more and more frustration as I thought the whole wireless tech was just worthless.

Then one day I got pissed at the wireless adapter because when I rubbed it on the back or even cooled it with my table fan, it would start working again...until I stopped rubbing it. I decided to get a new more powerful wireless adapter just to see if it would change anything. Saw good reviews for the Rosewill device and bought it.

OMG!!! Ever since I started using this device, ALL my router and internet problems disappeared!! The Rosewill device would connect to my router with 5 bars at all times at 300mbps wireless-n and not create a fuss...IT JUST WORKS! Since then my internet has been working uninterrupted and all the wired devices work without a hiccup. ALL BECAUSE OF ONE..BAD..DEVICE! How can this be? The old adapter was a D-Link connecting to a D-Link router...and that had issues while the Rosewill adapter and D-Link router work fine??? Just shows to prove that even the underdog is not to be underestimated.

Great little adapter for the price. It eliminated the hiccups I used to experience when streaming HD movies from my Linux-based NAS. It's also well-suited for online/lan gaming due to the responsiveness and low latency that it offers. I noticed improved performance when using Skype too. Range is well above average, but don't expect miracles despite the large antenna.

This adapter can also serve as an access point, and I have connected a variety of phones and tablets to it with surprisingly good results.

Pros:
-Range
-Low latency; good for gaming, skype and streaming.
-Speed; 300mbps (802.11n, WPA2-AES, 40Mhz)
-Can be used as a wireless access point.
-Drivers (Realtek, frequently updated, good Linux support)
-Backed by Rosewill (Newegg); customer service is excellent.
-Price

Cons:
-Does not support 5Ghz.
-Impractical for mobile use due to large antenna.
-Base stand is too light/narrow, tips over easily.

I had some issues with this adapter working with Windows 8.1, but I have the solution and I hope I can help others that might be suffering from the same problem I had.

The issue is that the driver that this adapter comes with does not support windows 8.1, so it suffers very slow speeds and doesn't even find 5ghz signals, and the website with the driver updates is out of date since Ralink is now Mediatek. Anyways, here's the solution:

1) Download the most up-to-date driver here: http://www.mediatek.com/en/downloads/
(This adapter is actually an RT5x7x model. So download the USB driver for that)
2) After you download the driver, open up Device Manager (you can search from the metro interface to find device manager)
3) Click on "Network Adapters" and it should show "802.11n USB Wireless LAN Card"
4) Right click on "802.11n USB Wireless LAN Card" and then click "Update Driver Software"
5) From there click "Browse my computer for Driver Software"
6) On the bottom click "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer"
7) Select the one that says "802.11n USB Wireless LAN Card (MediaTek, Inc.)" and hit Next.
8) Restart your computer and everything should be good!

I updated my driver to the MediaTek one about a week ago and haven't had any issues with this adapter since. I hope this helps!
