Before I found these Rosewill fan powered enclosures, I was using the Vantec aluminum ones that did not have a fan. Boy, they were like ovens heating up the hard drives inside. I had to resort to methods such as using (expensive) thermal pads to create a conducting path from the AL enclosure to the hard drive, and blowing air at the enclosure with a Thermaltake mobile USB fan to keep temperatures down. It was a messy and unelegant solution. That was in 2010.

Enter Rosewill's enclosures.

I have 3 of these enclosures (from the early e-sata/ usb 2 model to the latest e-sata/ usb 3 model), and I am still very happy to have discovered them. I first found them on NewEgg in 2011, where they have a huge fan following.

1. Temperatures

The Rosewill RX-358 U3C enclosure has an 80 mm fan that keeps my drives cool at about 40 degrees celsius. I do not have to worry about my drives failing prematurely due to prolonged high temperatures. It even has a switch to turn the fan off should you wish to do so for whatever reason.

2. Durability/ design

The RX-358 U3C's aluminum exterior is also very sturdy and I dare say built like a tank. While its matte finish is simple and somewhat dull looking compared to the glossy plastic finish that is so ubiquitous today (sadly found in everything from LCDs bezels to cellphones and what-not), it still looks way better than that ex-sexy glossy finish when it - and it definitely will - gets scratched up over time.

3. Speed

The articles on the USB 3 interface that I've read, such as those by Tom's Hardware, conclude that getting a good speed over USB 3 depends not just on the host controller, but also on the device controller. The USB 3 chip used by the RX 358 U3C is the AsMedia 1051.

Construction is tops, feels well made, easy install (maybe not for Mom). Wish the blue lights were dimmer or if I could disconnect the ON light.

After diligently researching almost every other alternative, this RX-358 beat the competition hands down. Great attention to detail. Solid construction (not flimsy plastic), beautifully finished in matte black virtually eliminating fingerprints. Powerful cooling fan is so silent you won't even know it's on (and it's independently switched if you want to turn it off...though I can't imagine why you would). Perfect fit easily accommodated a 3.5" Seagate Barracuda, effortless install took all of five minutes. Immediately recognized when connected and has blazing speed especially for going through USB. Independent power supply prevents unnecessary additional load on PC. Regarding the LEDs criticized in several other reviews, the unit I received performs exactly as described by Rosewill. The deep blue lights are not extremely bright, and the drive activity light works just like any of the other WD external drives I have. It does lack feet for the drive to rest on, but then most pictures show this unit standing on its edge anyway. Personally I don't care for that posture so I simply added four self adhesive rubber buttons and problem solved. Drive isolated with no vibration whatsoever, plus the extra space below further aides in cooling. Great value and the least expensive solution to gain an attractive external drive if you need one. As usual the price on Amazon beats anywhere online!

9/25/12 Updated Review:
Just received response from customer service. They state that the product is designed to have both blue LED lights on all the time "...to provide a symmetrical look but only the right front light will blink or flash when there is activity to the HDD." They said the manual had not been updated to reflect the product change. Based on the manufacturer's response I'm adjusting my rating from 3 stars to 4.

Original Review:
Like the overall build quality of the product. What kept this product from getting a fourth star is the fact that the "activity light" is always on, which per the product description should not happen. The activity light should be off until there is R/W activity. I sent a message to the manufacturer via their website, but never received a response. I just sent another one and will update this review on whether or not they respond to my second inquiry.

I bought two of these for my 1 TB backup disks (1 Seagate, 1 WD) to replace 2 Sans Digital fanless cases in which the disks get rather hot, and one of which became unreliable (it was the enclosure or its cabling or connectors, not the disk that failed - proven by swapping the disks). Those had the Oxford OXUF934 chip in them and this Rosewill case has a newer ASmedia 1051 + 1453 chipset (per the specs). I primarily use the eSATA interface, but the USB interface also seems to work for me in 2.0 mode. I have not tested it in a USB 3.0 port.

With Ubuntu 12.04 and eSATA this will hot-plug just fine. It doesn't automount for me but that is probably just my configuration. I am also able to spin the disk down on command (hdparm -y) and spin it back up easily. It does automount with USB for me on a machine with a more generic configuration.

SMART parameters are accessible via the chipset in this enclosure (via eSATA anyway). They were not available with the Oxford chipset as best I could tell. Tested with smartctl and my Seagate ST31000340AS (Barracuda 7200.11). Yes, this is a 4+ year old drive.

The blue LEDs are obnoxiously bright, but it is easy to unplug them. I keep the enclosure on its side on an old rubbery mouse pad so the fan is open to the air. You can't turn the fan down unless you add some standoffs or construct a stand of some sort so the fan can get some air. I suppose you could operate it with the fan turned up, but then the drive is upside down. That may be fine, but I'm not personally too comfortable with it. The fan sucks air in and vents out the front mostly but there are small vent holes in the back too so I think the drive electronics and enclosure board will get some air flow. The fan is pretty quiet (I don't hear it).
