Wassup with the bad review guys?

Let me first start off by saying this is the BEST wireless USB adapter I own yet. In the past five months, I had ordered three different types of USB wireless adapters (PREMIERTEK POWERLINK HERMES 11BGN USB 1W HI-POWER ADAPTER 2X9DBI ANTENNA, Etekcity High Power 802.11 B/N/G 300M USB Wireless 1000mw Wifi Network Adapter with Dual 6 dbi Antenna and two extra 13 dbi Antenna, and a Rosewill USB 2.0 External 5dBi Antenna Wireless Adapter RNX-N180UBE) for my Macbook Air OS 10.8 and Macbook Retina 10.8. Out of the four USB wireless adapters, only the Rosewill RNX-N180UBE, and Rosewell RNX-N250UBE work without a hitch on my OSX. The Premietek and Etekcity didn't work on my OSX that well. I kept on getting disconnected from a FREE public wifi that is more than 300 feet from my location and they both claim 1000mw or 2000mw which is all garbage marketing to me now. They Premiertek and Etecity didn't work on my Mac OSX 10.8 a few months ago because there were no drivers for it. If Apple decide to upgrade to a new OSX, good luck waiting 4-5 months for a new drivers from Premiertek and Etecity since they both use the same wireless chipset, just different brand name. IMHO I prefer the Realtek wifi chipset from Rosewill than Ralink chipset from Etecity and Premiertek.

The Rosewill N180UBE has an amazing range also (~150-200ft without any congestion), but not as strong as the N250UBE. My Macbook Retina can catch a wifi signal farther than the Rosewill N180UBE which is pretty darn good but its not as strong as the Rosewill N250UBE. I was planning to buy the BearExtender Mini Wifi USB claiming it has 1000mw chipset and is the only USB adapter that work for Mac OS. After doing further reasearch I found out it has the same chipset as the Premiertek and Etecity.

I have a home with a shop located about 70 feet away. Both buildings are enclosed with aluminum panels. My computer in the shop has a built-in wireless circuit. It was dropping the connection and would not authenticate reliably. Enter the RNX. The XP Home driver was included on a CD and the installation was straight-forward. Initially, I direct connected the RNX to a USB port on the computer. The signal strength to my home router now indicated a much improved 4 out of 5 bars. However, the signal would oscillate to poor and still not connect when the router was selected. I then connected the RNX to an externally powered USB hub that was connected to the computer. This eliminated the oscillation and the computer now connects reliably at N speed to the router. Finally, I moved the RNX to a window and gained another bar. It has been working fine now for several weeks. Look Mom, nooooo wires!

The thing works great. I originally bought a tiny edimax wireless adapter that claimed 150Mbps and it sucked so bad. I was lucky to get download speeds of 50KB a second. It was crap and cost 10 bucks. With this, you spend an extra 5 bucks and you actually get something that not only works but hits its claimed speeds, I've even had it hit faster speeds for short bursts of time. I thought i was in the matrix. How is this possible I said. As long as it doesn't break and stop working i would recommend this to anyone that is looking to add the ability of wireless to a device. It only gets four stars because nothing is perfect, and the weight of the antennas is to much for the usb to stay plugged into a usb port on its own. so you have no choice but to use the dock. This is on a desktop where usb's are positioned vertically not horizontal. so maybe all you horizontal people it will work out but i'm vertical so it wouldn't stay in.

This thing seems to work perfectly fine. It comes with a USB extender, which is nice because it can sit on top of your desk, rather than in the back of the computer right against a wall. I tend to have fine ping and throughput.

The downside of having it on your desk, though, is that it can fall from there. A few weeks after getting it I accidentally knocked it down to the ground, and the plastic casing flew off, leaving just the PCB and antennas. It doesn't seem to be possible to get the casing back on. Obviously it was my fault for knocking it over, but I was bummed to see that it was so fragile. To its credit, it does still work after that!

Seems like a pretty middle-of-the-road wireless adapter. If that is what you're looking for, I recommend it.

Works fine under Windows.

Under Linux, using the rtl8192cu driver built into the kernel (the latest version I've used is 3.10.25), the adapter disconnects after a short period of inactivity. It seems to last about 30-60 seconds, then the adapter stops responding. It can be worked around by constantly pinging my local router, but that's a bit of a pain to deal with.

I would not recommend this adapter to anyone running Linux.

I bought this to replace the built-in WiFi adapter on my desktop. I went from a ridiculously unstable connection that hovered between 2/3 bars at a low speed to a very stable 5/5 bar connection at a higher speed. It works as advertised. Couldn't be happier with the product.

I get my network WIFI signal through a Verizon 4510L MIFI Jetpack, which doesn't exactly put out the most robust WIFI signal. I was having trouble getting any signal at all on my laptop when it was a couple of rooms away from the jetpack, so I installed this adapter. What a difference! Now, I get 70% signal strength even at the other end of the house. Of course, it's a pretty big adapter for use in a laptop. I don't use the included dongle/stand, but just stick the adapter into one of the laptop's USB ports and point the "ears" up. It's not really inconvenient and works great. I've had no problem at all with this adapter.
