Product Description

Amazon.com Review

With 100 shapes to choose from, this cookie cutter set offers kids the perfect combination of fun and education. Placing the cutters in their various categories, for example, is a playful exercise that teaches abstract logic and builds confidence. Categories include letters, numbers, geometric forms, animals, plants, vehicles, symbols (such as a dollar sign and a question mark), seasonal themes, and miscellaneous shapes such as an umbrella and a bell. The cutters are formed of stiff, durable plastic, are colorful and fascinating enough to be used outside the kitchen, and are dishwasher-safe. A tip to grandparents: keep this set handy as a special treat, unique to your home, for little visitors. --Fred Brack

5.0 out of 5 stars A very complete set, May 29, 2000
This review is from: Roshco 100-Piece Plastic Cookie Cutter Set (Kitchen)
These are high-quality sturdy plastic cookie cutters. Their sizes range from 2" to 4", and they come in a large variety of shapes. Although there are some holiday themed cutters, they do not dominate the set so people of all cultural backgrounds should be able to find shapes that they would like.

Here is an enumeration of what comes in the set:

26 letters

10 digits

15 animals (duck, cat, horse, elephant, sparrow, butterfly, giraffe, turkey, mouse, lion, fish, rabbit, deer, teddy bear, dog)

3 dinosaurs (t-rex, stegasaurus, brontosaurus)

3 plants (flower, shamrock, fir tree)

10 shapes (square, octagon, cross, five-pointed star, arrow, diamond, pentagon, circle, rectangle, triangle)

4 sport-themed (football, hockey stick, baseball bat, tennis racket)

12 vehicles (3 part train set, boat, car, bus, chopper, truck, bicycle, motorcycle, plane, rocket)

4 symbols (heart, dollar sign, question mark, note)

7 seasonal (Santa, witch, pumpkin, snowman, draedle, gingerbread man, egg)

6 miscellaneous (umbrella, bell, ice cream cone, US map, flag, hand)

3.0 out of 5 stars some cutters work great while others do not, July 31, 2002
This review is from: Roshco 100-Piece Plastic Cookie Cutter Set (Kitchen)
This huge set is a real bargain at 100 cutters for [the price]. I especially was drawn to these because it contains all the letters of the alphabet and all the numbers. I had been looking for letters and found one set that was nearly $30 for just the 26 letters. You can easily see why this set is a bargain.

I have used this so far on cookie dough only, traditional homemade sugar cookie dough intended for use with cookie cutters. I found the cutters with the solid back part (such as the cone part of the ice cream cone) were very hard to separate from the dough, rendering the imprint/cookie cutout completely ruined. This was the case for all the ones that had a solid backing section. The cutters with clear backs (such as the letters) were fine. I was dipping them in flour first...to no avail.

Another problem that causes me to give this a three star rating is that some of the detailed (and interesting to my children) cutters such as the transportation vehicles have such tiny sections--the dough stuck to them and would not release them and it broke off and therefore was ruined. I put the offending cutters aside and plan to go through it (alone) and take out the ones that simply don't work to save the children disappointment and tears, which did happen with the above mentioned incident.

I have not tried this on inedible play dough recipes yet so I don't know if the above problems are unique to cookie dough.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not just for baking, February 22, 2001
This review is from: Roshco 100-Piece Plastic Cookie Cutter Set (Kitchen)
While these are too much fun for cookie parties (see the set of 12 paste food colors to make fun icings for cookies) you can use these for other things.

Kids love to play with modeling clay. You can make salt dough as an inexpensive and fun toy and use it along with these cutters. To make salt dough you need: 4 cups flour 1 cup plain or iodized salt 1-1/2 cups hot tap water

Pour the hot water and salt into the bowl and stir for 1 minute. The grains of salt will not completely dissolve. Add the flour and stir until the water is absorbed. To make colored dough, add 1/4 cup liquid tempera paint to the water before adding it to the flour.

Knead for several minutes until smooth and clay-like. To preserve salt dough creations for posterity, bake the dough on a cookie sheet at 325 F for about two hours. Dough should be solid throughout, including the thickest parts. Store dough in a plastic bag or covered container. Use the dough within 24 hours.

You can varnish the finished, baked dough with urethane varnish. This technique can be used to make centerpieces for holidays.
