Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

The Philosophical Research Society is a nonprofit organization founded in 1934 for the purpose of assisting thoughtful persons to live more graciously and constructively in a confused and troubled world. The Society is entirely free from educational, political, or ecclesiastical control. Dedicated to an idealistic approach to the solution of human problems, the Society's program stresses the need for the integration of religion, philosophy, and the science of psychology into one system of instruction. The goal of this instruction is to enable the individual to develop a mature philosophy of life, to recognize his proper responsibilities and opportunities, and to understand and appreciate his place in the unfolding universal pattern.

From the Back Cover

It has been assumed that the Rosicrucians prophesied a new world order by the stars, by cabalistic configurations, geomancy, and extrasensory perception. Most of the leaders directly associated with the Universal Reformation were contemporaries. Bacon was unfolding his new order of learning in England. The Dukes of Brunswick-Luneburg were engaged in mystical pursuits in what is now Germany. Blaise de Vigenere was perfecting his cyphers and symbols in France, and Boccalini in Venice was putting the finishing touches on his satirical commentaries on the foibles on the Italian court. A vast literature keyed to a single purpose and so marked that its meaning was undeniable heralding the dawn of intellectual freedom. In the early seventeenth century many were persecuted by the state and church, but discreetly labored for the liberation of the human mind from slavery to scholasticism and bigotry. These were the secret heroes who prepared the way for freedom-physical, moral, and ethical.

It is doubtful that the complete history of the Society of the Unknown Philosophers can ever be fully revealed for the utopians of the present century. Names fade away, but occasionally useful fragments of esoteric biography come to light. Revivals of ancient cults are common events, but claims or pretensions must be examined with appropriate mental reservations. Everything evolves and changes except reality itself which never changes, but assumes contemporary appearances.
