Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Although the issue of homelessness has virtually disappeared from the evening news, scores of homeless still populate our nation's cities and struggle to survive. Cleghorn, an experienced journalist, paints an intimate portrait of a group of these people?women who inhabit Rosie's Place, a women's shelter in Boston. What makes Rosie's Place different, according to Cleghorn, is that the women are not just given housing but are assisted to achieve self-sufficiency and independence. The reader comes to know the individuals striving toward these goals despite the handicaps of drug addiction, AIDS, and mental-health problems. The overall tone is quite positive and hopeful about solutions. Unfortunately, the anecdotes and verbatim conversations of shelter life lose their impact after the first few chapters. A more satisfying portrait may be found in Lisa Ferrill's A Far Cry from Home (Noble, 1991). Recommended for large women's studies and social science collections.?Deborah Bigelow, Leonia
