HOW'S THIS FOR AN OPENER? GREAT!,
This review is from: Rosle Can Opener (Kitchen)
While most hand can openers are considered as outdated as a wood stove, here's one that puts many electric models to shame. Crafted in Germany with stainless steel this opener is sleekly designed. Appearance isn't its only asset - it really functions. You simply hold the handle with your left hand and position the support (a steel half moon) parallel to the top of the can edge. Give the handle a slight twist backward, and presto your can is at the cutting wheel's mercy. Then move the handle forward until the can is open. One more slight twist backward and the grip is released. I can well remember the dark ages when I struggled with hand openers, unable to insert the cutter into the can, straining to turn the handle, and then seeing the lid plop into the can's contents. On a good day I didn't cut my hand on the lid's jagged edge. No more, this is a never-fail, smooth operation. Rosle has produced a pleasingly designed, easy to operate can opener that works with surgical precision. - Gail Cooke

Great at first..then broke,

I come from modest means. Regardless of the fact that I've worked in the food and beverage industry for the past 18 years, if my grandma or mom knew I spent $28 on a can opener...they would think I lost my mind. I was thinking the same thing walking out of "The Restaurant Store" in Key West, but I easily quelled my guilt by telling myself "you'll never have to buy another can opener again". Not true. It stripped out after approximately 10 months of use (and it's not like I open cans every day).
Aside from it breaking, I'd like to point out another thing. At parties, and while it still worked, I'd pull out this opener, and play a game to see who could make it work. One such evening, it stumped 14 guests in a row. Not stupid people mind you. Even once you do figure it out, it could be challenging...it would still confuse me from time to time. I like the brand, but for this money, it should last a lifetime...at least longer than the shelf life of the cans it's supposed to open. My favorite store refunded my money no questions asked, and sent it back to the factory. I don't recommend. Check out the Kuhn Rikon can opener, I really like mine...and it was $3 cheaper.

The can opener worked well for the first year, but like a lot of people who have commented, it just stopped working. After a year, Amazon couldn't help. I emailed customer service several times through email at rosle and never got one response. So if you don't mind paying $30 for using a can opener occasionally for a year, this is your product. But for most of us, this just isn't reliable. A can opener is a pretty simple tool and there isn't a reason why it shouldn't "just work" all the time. So although I really liked it the first year, I am very disappointed with the product today. It won't open a can, it just spins in place and pretty much does nothing now and customer service from Rosle is non-existent. So poor value, poor reliability, poor craftsmanship (only lasted a year) and very poor service. i really wanted to like this product but it is nothing more than a paper weight now.

It's honestly the BEST can opener i've ever used!!!,

This is honestly the very best can opener i've ever used. I"ve tried plenty of other "safety" can openers that claim they cut below the rim of the lid so that there are no sharp edges. My problems with all these OTHER saftey can openers are as follows: (1) it's hard to line up the cutting wheel with the lid; (2) if/when you do line it up, the turning of the cutting wheel is difficult and labored; (3) you don't know when you've gone all the way around, since there's nothing to indicate you've passed the starting poing (in fact, i think with some of these other safety can openers, i'm re-cutting a whole new line into the can which doesn't line up with the old line b/c there's no guide to keep it perfectly even); and (4) it's nearly impossible to lift off the lid.
Well, with the Rosle, ALL of those complaints are completely remedied. First, it's so simple to line up the cutting wheel with the lid b/c of that handy metal bar. You just place that metal bar flat on the rim of the lid, and turn the handle backwards a half-turn or so, and then turn the handle foward a smidge, and the cutting wheel is locked onto the lid. Second, turning the cutting wheel is so easy, it's almost effortless. No straining or working hard or difficultly in the least bit. Third, you will definately know when you've passed the point of the can where you started at, since there will be a noticable difference in the turning of the wheel when you hit the point where you started. To me, this confirms that the cutting wheel is going over the EXACT same point where you started, which makes sense since the metal bar that you used to line up the wheel to the lid would ensure that the cutting wheel stayed in the exact same position throughout the entire cut. And fourth, getting the lid off the can is very easy. All you have to do is flip your wrist while you're holding the Rosle opener after your last turn, and the lid comes off, held firmly in place by the Rosle's cutting wheel. To get it off the wheel, just spin the handle backwards a smidge. All in all, the Rosle can opener is a SUPERIOR can opener, not only to that of the other "safety" can openers on the market, but also to the "regualar" can openers too. Absolutely worth the money!!!

I don't understand German but......,

This review is from: Rosle Can Opener (Kitchen)
After receiving my can opener I realized all the directions were written in German! Well after some trial and error I finally figured it out. Now that I have used it I really love it. It opens cans so neatly-no lids can fall into the can- and works so smoothly. It is very European in design and style-a nice edition to a cook's kitchen. I am glad that I have finally found a can opener that will last as well as be comfotable to use.

It's takes a couple of cans to get the hang of it, but then you'll wonder how you ever opened cans without it. Read the included instructions and follow the pictures til you figure it out. We've had other "safety" can openers that have been difficult to use and often necessitated going around the can several times. Not so with the Rosle. Go around once, and the lid is freed from the can. It's expensive, but well worth it. A joy to use and very easy to clean, should you splash something on it.

Easy and Fun,
By A Customer
This review is from: Rosle Can Opener (Kitchen)
All can openers I had before worked good when they were new and were hard to use after couple of months. Other frustrating things were lid falling down in the can and hazardous sharp edges. Not to mention quality of Stainless steel from China used by many manufactures. Finally I decided what my priorities for can opener are: 1: Lifetime warranty, 2: German quality. This one has it all and more! It may look little a bit pricey for a can opener, but considering how much money I have already spent on all those old can openers that finished in trash, I was ready to pay for a good thing (and it has Lifetime warranty). I have this one for couple of months now. It works like magic. Firs time I could not believe it can be so easy to open the can. It cuts along the side of a can's rim and lid can't fall into can. Cut is nice and clean with no sharp edges. Opener does not touch the can's contents and it stays clean. It is a real joy opening cans with this fantastic tool. There are not enough stars for it!

High price, low quality. Buy a Kuhn-Rikon.,

Effective until it failed after 18 months of occasional use. No longer grips the can edge. No response from the company. $30 piece of junk. Save your receipt. You will need to make warranty claims. Not durable. Poor design. This opener grabs the can parallel to the can side. The Kuhn-Rikon opener is a much better choice: much less expensive, grabs the can perpendicular to the side, giving a tighter grip on the edge, better leverage.

Doesn't last long - Buyers beware,

I purchased this product due to the reputation Rosle has and due to they warranty the product for life. Yet when the product failed I cannot seem to figure out how to get it replaced. The gears have stripped out making it impossible to use. My wife cut her hand really bad trying to open a can with it after it failed but she was determined to open the can but this didn't happen. I had to run her to the emergency room and on the way home we stopped and purchased a can open because who knows how long it will take to get Rosle to replace it. I have written emails to the company with no replies yet. As fast as this oriduct failed I believe Rosle will have to either have to correct their design or send me a new can opener annualy on a scheduled basis. When the product works it works well but the product quality is poor if the gears strip out in a years time.

Great opener, but poor longevity, found better substitute,
By
This review is from: Rosle Can Opener (Kitchen)
We bought this at a Villeroy & Bach factory outlet store for about $14 4 years ago. We loved it the whole time and it saw daily use, but it eventually stopped working because the teeth that turn the can failed. We went back to the outlet store to swap it for a working one and found the store was no more.
While we were at the outlet mall we went into a kitchen gadget store and found a "Good Cook" brand "safe-cut opener" (google for "good cook 11834") which is virtually identical (even same insignia on the wheel with teeth that wears out). The two big improvements are that the can gripping comes from squeezing levers not force from turning opener (makes it more intuitive for guests; might reduce teeth slippage, reducing wear, making it last longer) and it was cheaper, just $9. |
