Well-Engineered Tongs,

This review is from: Rosle 12926 12-Inch Silicone Coated Locking Tongs (Kitchen)
I have several pairs of the Rosle locking tongs. I bought these silicone-tipped tongs for use with my enamel coated, Le Creuset Dutch Ovens and frying pan in order to avoid scratching the surface. As expected, they work extremely well and the silicon is grippier than some of the plastic-tipped tongs I have used in the past. Like all of the dozen or so Rosle products I have purchased (garlic press, food mill, can opener, etc.), these are well designed, precisely engineered, durable, heavy-weight products that function better than competitor's counterparts. The single-handed lock/unlock mechanism is wonderful and is why I purchased my first set of Rosle locking tongs. That feature is tremendously handy and sometimes borders on invaluable when you are moving fast in the kitchen and your other hand is occupied.
One word of warning - be careful not to tilt the tongs past ninety degrees when using the Rosle locking tongs to remove hot spaghetti, fettucine or other pasta from boiling water or the boiling water will run down the inside channels of the tongs and onto your hand. In other words, keeps the tongs pointed down or slightly below horizontal when lifting the hot pasta to ensure that any hot water runs or drip down and does not flow up the inside of the tongs and onto your hand. The only downside of these tongs is the relatively high cost and the fact that these tongs, and most of the Rosle line, are now manufactured in China (hence the 4 star rating rather than 5). As to the cost, the quality of the Rosle products offsets that complaint. All the Rosle products I have purchased, used and given as gifts, are sufficiently superior that I don't object to the premium price. I just wish that they were made in Germany rather than China. If this was anything other than stainless steel, I would engage in search for a US or European made alternative. Since I am trusting that the Chinese have not yet figured out a way to incorporate lead or another harmful metal into stainless steel alloy, I have continued to purchase the stainless steel Rosle products, although I suppose that I am gambling with the Chinese-made silicone tips in this pair. In any event, these are well-made tongs but I do wish that Rosle would return to German manufacture, even if it bumped the price up a bit.

Too Clunky,

I love the concept of these tongs and I wanted something that would not scratch my nonstick pans. However, the rubber coating on these tongs is so thick that the tongs are awkward to use. They are really unwieldy, and even snap back to open when they have been sitting closed on the counter for minutes. This design needs to be rethought for user friendliness.

I bought these for my wife, and she absolutely loves them. Very solid feel, great in the dishwasher, and the "locking" feature (which I wasn't certain would be a positive) has proven to be very handy in picking up small pieces and making sure they stay closed when stored. Excellent product!

I know that the Oxo Good Grips 12-Inch Locking Tongs with Nylon Heads is rated well by a leading cooking magazine. However, the Oxo Good Grips 12-Inch Locking Tongs with Nylon Heads uses a nylon head. My experience with nylon cooking utensils is with spatulas and once it is heated directly (like on a fry pan), the nylon starts delaminating or fraying, even with the more expensive Calphalon professional series (I know, I own them). I also used my Rosle silicone coated tongs for grilling on my Le Creuset Enameled Cast-Iron Giant Reversible Grill/Griddle and the silicone head can take the direct heat without melting.
One of the things that is different with the Rosle tongs is that they are made with a heavy gauge stainless steel. All other similar shaped scalloped tongs are made by bending a thinner gauge stainless steel to form the handle. The fold creates a hollow where food can creep up the pincher, especially when using the tongs to grab flat noodles. By comparison, the underside of the Rosle's handles areas is wide open so that even if food collects under the handle, you can easily clean that area. With all other traditional tongs like my favorite Edlund Restaurant Tongs - Scalloped: 12 INCH, I store them by putting one of the arms into a crock and letting the other arm hang outside. The only way I can store these in a kitchen crock is by sticking the entire tool in the crock (pincher ends up). Why should you care? Depending on how you store your kitchen tongs, it may take up more room (like my situation with a kitchen crock). If you don't need non-stick cookware safe kitchen tongs, seriously look at the scalloped Edlund Restaurant Tongs - Scalloped: 12 INCH: they are my favorite kitchen tongs and are made in the US! The Edlund Restaurant Tongs - Scalloped: 12 INCH are priced about the same as the Oxos (Oxos are made in China). PROS: The pincher ends have a great grip, are precise, and even small amounts of food release from the silicone head. Also, silicone is a better non-slip material for moving ramekins and other ceramic cookware (Bain Marie). The under side of the tong handles are wide open making it easy to keep that area of the tongs clean. The silicone does not melt or deform with high heat like nylon heads CONS: Have to get used to the locking mechanism. They are expensive for tongs Made in China.

I never thought tongs were a cooking tool to get excited about, but these are truly wonderful. Very pricey, but I decided the locking aspect would be nice....and it is! The silicone tips make them useable in all types of pans, and they are comfortable and easy to use, also easy to clean. Too bad they are made in China, but they are definitely well made and worth the money if you utilize tongs very much.

Love this item. I especially like the fact that you can open and close it without having to pull or push on a tab at the end of the tongs. The tongs lock if you hold them upright and just push them together or hold them pointing downward and press together and they unlock. The silicone is good for non-stick pans and washing in the dishwasher is a breeze. Have purchased extras for my sister and nieces as they work so well. All kitchens should have a pair.

Silicon locking tongs are the cat's meow!,

These tongs are exactly as advertised. They are well built, work great and won't mar my expensive non stick coated pans. I highly recommend them. Worth the money for sure!

Very well made and sturdy. The only drawback I think they have is, that they are quite heavy for their size. At least for me.

Although I agree with a reviewer that the silicone is inconveniently thick, these tongs have been helpful in situations where I was flailing around, wondering how to correct something quickly, and not having the right tool.(For those sensitive to the silicone thickness, it appears that 1 mm of could be shaved from the tip with a razor blade, on both front and back. The back will be just as useful, and if you mess up by cutting to the metal, it won't make much difference. I'm going to try this.) (Also, anecdotally, I had good fun with a couple relatives ... showing them the open tongs ... locking them behind my back ... then showing the tongs locked ... and challenging them to figure out the mechanism. Lolol.) |
