This review is from: Roster of the patriots in the battle of Moores Creek Bridge (Paperback)
About the Battle: The Battle of Moores Creek Bridge was fought on Feb. 27, 1776, making it the first battle of the American Revolution in the South. It was a battle that American colonist fought against each other--which in reality was a Civil War. The battle site is located in Pender County, North Carolina, although it contains men who settled throughout the Carolina colony.Patriot Forces: a.. Col. Alexander Lillington with 150 men This 246 page book is not simply a listing of names It is a biographical roster compiled by Dr. Bobby Gilmer Moss, who spent a lifetime researching the lives of individual soldiers, in various battles of the southern campaign of the American Revolution. Using all known records, this is a historical reconstruction of the American Patriots present in the Battle of Moores Creek Bridge, that was fought on Feb. 27, 1776. Please keep in mind that this is more of a genealogical reference book than one would read from front to back covers. Moss includes valuable biographical information on many of the men(even dates of arrival to America for some). Other soldiers are listed with birth and marriage information. For most, the individual's service record in the American Revolution is included. Book includes excellent maps, and a description of the battle. Moss admits that after a long search he was unable to locate some records. So the roster is not entirely complete. But it is the best roster ever compiled to date. An example partial entry for one of the in depth entries (Please keep in mind that most names do not have as much detail. But for genealogical purposes even a little bit of information could be quite valuable.): "Williams, Benjamin, b. 30 Nov 1754; d. 29 Oct. 1818, Smithville, North Carolina. M. Ann (dau. of William and Ann Simpson, ___ May 1774. While residing in Brunswick County, Benjamin Williams, the son of Joseph Williams, enlisted in a company of light horsemen under a Capt. Cullenden. The Provincial Congress appointed him Lieutenant in the 2nd North Carolina Regiment...Williams moved to Duplin County, where he joined a company of light horsemen under Capt. Dodd, as a Lieutenant, and was in the Battle of Moores Creek Bridge. In April 1776, Col. Richard Caswell sought to get the Congress to get the Congress to appoint him as Captain. He was in the Battle of Briar Creek in Georgia. His unit was attached to the 2nd North Carolina Regiment of the Continental Line and he was in several campaigns. Two of his brothers served during the Revolution. His widow, Ann, was born 16 Jan 1755. The children of Williams were: Mary (10 Apr 1776); Ann....(lists ten children with birthdates)... His widow was granted a pension on her application executed 15 March 1839, Brunswick Co., North Carolina and 4 July 1839 in Charleston, South Carolina. She died on or about 17 April, 1840...."
