Book Description

April 1, 2008
Teenager Joe Ferris was raised to help guests -- he was third generation in the motel business -- but once he connected with mute Judith, they were off on an epic thousand mile road trip through the Southwest, all to help the most unique guests of all -- the Roswell aliens stranded far from home since 1947. With the Men in Black hot on their trail, and discovering that the aliens had more tricks up their sleeves than their captors had ever discovered, Joe and Judith have to wonder just who is taking whom on the ride of their lives!

Very Highly Recommended

Henry Melton writes books for teenagers. Visit him at henrymelton.com and at http://henrymelton.blogspot.com

This story is about two teenage kids, Joe and mute Judith, who plunge into a fast paced adventure to save eleven aliens! It reads like a road movie, since the kids are mainly on the road, moving to different places and encountering risky situations.

The plot is tight enough to keep the interest intact till the characters solve their problem. A strange talkie, a mysterious courier and a couple of spies are all involved in this exciting story that will entertain kids of that age. The story is highly original, witty and educational as well. This is the second book I have actually read by this author and I would gladly read any other by Henry Melton. It caters to all the family.

More About the Author

Henry Melton travels half the year in a satellite Internet equiped RV with his wife Mary Ann, a nature photographer. A jagged path has taken them to dozens of science fiction conventions and even more National Wildlife Refuges. His writing office is often a laptop perched on the Jeep's steering wheel as she tracks down the rare and the beautiful beside some secluded dirt road.
From the Redwood forests to Death Valley to the Great Lakes to Delaware swamps to the African bush, scenes out the windshield become locales for his fiction work. Check his website, HenryMelton.com for current location, a blog of his activities, and scheduled appearances. Many years of travel stories are archived on-line.
Formerly a programmer specializing in database work and web design, he pioneered Internet use for a Fortune 500 company until the tech bubble collapse. In the early days of home computers, he created one of the earliest commercial word processing programs.
Henry's short fiction has been published in magazines and anthologies, most frequently in ANALOG. "Catacomb", published in DRAGON magazine, is considered a classic, and by the continuing fan mail twenty years later, a formative influence among modern computer gaming programmers.
Other than an occasional short story, most of his time is spent writing science fiction YA novels. Currently being published by Wire Rim Books are the Small Towns, Big Ideas series of science fiction. "Emperor Dad", the first of the books, won the 2008 Darrell Award for Best Midsouth Novel. "Lighter Than Air" won the 2009 Eleanor Cameron Award (Golden Duck Award) for Middle Grade Science Fiction.

4.0 out of 5 stars Out of this World!, April 8, 2008

This review is from: Roswell or Bust (Paperback)
Henry Melton just won the Darrel Award for his first novel Emperor Dad. Melton is a writer who has traveled all over the United States and across many countries, and has just begun to put those travels to good use in the form of Young Adult Science Fiction. He started the Small Towns, Big Ideas series with Emperor Dad and followed it up with this month's Roswell or Bust.

Joe Ferris, a teenager trapped in the family business, wants to see the country. He hates his life because all his siblings seem to have escaped the life of helping out in the family's Railroad Motel in Las Vegas, New Mexico. When one of the regulars "John Smith" disappears suddenly leaving behind a strange device that looks like a remote control (but not his room key), life quickly becomes un-mundane.

Joe meets John Smith's daughter, Judith, who, even though she is mute, has a knack for leading Joe into strange situations and then leaving him stranded. The story takes us all over the Southwest exploring the secret bases set up by Men in Black suits who are keeping the country's biggest secret--the alien survivors of the crashed spaceship of 1947.

The secret society known as the Trust, is falling apart at the seams because the well-loved and respected leader is losing his health and his son has not garnered the same loyalty as he took the helm of the Trust.

Reading Roswell or Bust will give let you enjoy Science Fiction, even if you haven't been a big fan in the past, and will clue you into why Melton was chosen for an award from the SF community in his first outing as a novelist. It's a great escape (and not only for the aliens who've been kept captive for many decades). (Actual rating = 4.75.)
