More About the Author

Grandma Garrison was Nancy's mentor while she made her first quilt in 1972. Gram asked her to cut a 6-inch square template from paper and pin it on some fabric. Using regular scissors, quite dull, Nancy cut around the paper template. After cutting about two dozen squares, she noticed some of the squares were not the same size. Nancy called Gram and said, "My blocks don't seem to be the same size." Gram replied, "Are you cutting any of the paper template off when you cut around it?" Nancy replied, "No, only once in a while!" That was Nancy's first lesson in accuracy and it has stuck with her all these years. Today her hallmark is accuracy, and she stresses it with students and attributes the wide recognition of her work to its continued emphasis.

She has written several best-selling books, including Featherweight 221: The Perfect Portable, and Rotary Magic. Nancy also refined how to work with squares and rectangles in her other best-selling books Block Magic; Block Magic, Too!; and Stars by Magic. Recently she was granted a U.S. patent for her innovative technique used for making Eight-Point Stars from squares and rectangles.

Nancy has been a spokesperson and consultant for Omnigrid, a division of Prym Consumer USA, Inc., for over eighteen years.

Her hobbies include reading mysteries, traveling to see children and grandchildren, working in her flower gardens (they keep expanding), and making baby quilts for charity. In recent years she has donated over 600 quilts to brighten the lives of needy children and parents. Nancy lives in Pennsylvania with her husband, Frank.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful basics and beyond quilting book!, January 4, 2000
This review is from: Rotary Magic: Easy Techniques to Instantly Improve Every Quilt You Make (Hardcover)
I'm not a perfectionist sewer so I figured my attempts at quilting would be laughable. And they were. Thanks to this book, I learned simple, time-saving tricks that made even me, a questionable seamstress, produce great results. This isn't your usual quilting how-to book: it covers EVERY aspect to finish a great quilt top including pointing out common errors before you have a chance to make them. If you only buy one how-to-cut-and-piece book, this is it. For machine quilting, I looked to Robbie and Tony Fanning's book on machine quilting and haven't been disappointed since.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for any beginning quilter! (I'm one), August 23, 1999
By A Customer
I just began piecing quilts a month ago. I took one beginning class and read this book cover to cover. I have since pieced several wall hanging sized tops, all of which look so good my husband wants me to make each into full bed sized quilts. The instructions are thorough and well illustrated. It gives truly "fool proof" methods for cutting pieces for your own designs in simple to follow steps. I tend to use only proven patterns in all of my crafts (I'm afraid of disaster with my own designs), but with Rotary Magic's help I designed my first project and it came out beautifully. Thank you for such a wonderful addition to my craft library and the beginning of what will now be many years of happy quilting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly practical..., November 2, 2001
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I ordered several books when I decided to learn to quilt, and found this book to be one of the most practical. In particular, she provides a guide to brand names for rotary cutters, mats, and rulers, which I found to be extremely useful in deciding what to buy. The book is filled to the brim with very practical tips on everything from setting up your sewing room to use of the rotary cutter. The presentation of the material is very concise, with lots of charts and lists presented in an interesting way. This book was very helpful to me as a beginner, but I think it would be useful for intermediate to advanced quilters as well because of all the tips.
