3.0 out of 5 stars I really wanted to like this more, September 15, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
As stated I really wanted to like this thing...and as it stands it's still not a bad buy. I'll break the review out by piece:

Case: Fairly heavy duty nylon with metallic carrying handle (the kind you find in the older military belts). Aver-the-top cover with velcro to keep it closed.

Knife: Love the knife. Nice size, sharp and holds a good edge. Can be used for food, but sturdy enough for "work".

Fork/Spoon: I love the fact you can remove them from the main tool. So many "camp utensils" are stuck on one device, so if you have to cut, then fork you end up swapping between tools. While you'll be spending some time eating soup with the spoon (its really not that big, about the size of a quarter) its servicable. As it is, both utensils are smaller than I'd hoped, but they work and are detachable which helps to make up for their shortcomings.

Corkscrew: For those times you need to open a bottle of wine in the mountains...

Can Opener: Absolutely useless. Had to open a can of baked beans and just wouldn't work. I had to break out the Swiss Army Knife to do it.

Handle: Its made of a hard plastic material. While I haven't seen anything to make me think it won't last, I can't help but think a smack on a rock will crack this. Rubberized handle would have been much preferred.

Overall: Not a bad product, but one that does have its shortcomings. I won't "rush out" to replace it now, but if I see something that looks better I won't be thinking over it all that much.

4.0 out of 5 stars Been through 3 OIF rotations, January 14, 2010
This review is from: Rothco Foreign Legion 5-in-1 Chow Set (Misc.)
Not a bad buy. It has it's bad points, but the good outweigh the bad. I bought it during my first rotation to Iraq (2005-2006) because the cheap plasticware we had to use in the DFAC kept breaking on me when I had anything harder than mashed potatos to cut or stab. I loved the fact that it was a compact system which I could wear on my belt and that the spoon and fork could seperate from the knife. The whole system is very sturdy.

Knife- Has a nice sharp edge to it, although the plastic handle seems a bit cheap, it's not bad overall. At least I didn't have to worry about not being able to cut through the shoe soles they called meat at the chow hall.

Fork- Kinda short, but very sturdy. I never had to worry about the forks breaking off stabbing a tough piece of meat.

Spoon- Same height as the fork. Don't expect to woof down a whole can of beans in a very short time w/ this thing or dig all the way down to the bottom of an MRE meal, but it does it's job.

Corkscrew- Never used it. No alcohol allowed in Theatre. :-\.

Can opener- Tried to use it and failed miserably. Thank God I had my trusty rusty P-38 can opener.

2.0 out of 5 stars CHINA, November 23, 2008
This review is from: Rothco Foreign Legion 5-in-1 Chow Set (Misc.)
This is advertised as European. I did not realize China was part of Europe. It is basicly a far from what I expected,I threw it away after the first use. It is not European quality, It is misrepresented.

European style? European copy? Cinese Milititary? some or all these would be more true.
