I've owned a couple of these over the years, the first when I was just a teenager (many moons ago). I used and abused that first one until it was virtually destroyed, to include poking holes into road signs (shhh!) and chipping away at concrete. A few minutes on the belt sander brought the battered blade back to life. Much to my chagrin, that knife has been lost after several moves around the world.

Years later, I've obtained yet another exactly like the first. I'm much more careful (and hopefully wise) now, and have done a few minor modifications to ensure this blade outperforms any other in my inventory. It's my EDC "go-to" knife as part of my kit, and accompanies me on even minor expeditions off the beaten path. I used to be part of the "big knife" school of thought, and although they serve their place in my main pack, I've found that a utility blade not much longer than the width of my palm like this knife will do 99% of the tasks I need "out there". Just of note, the back of the blade is *not* a saw, but a notcher, used to notch wood and metal. This is useful for making traps and shelters. Since it isn't a saw, you can still easily baton the blade through thicker pieces of wood without chewing through the baton.

First, a few tips to get the best use out of this particular knife. Although it will certainly take anything you can throw at it and then some, there are a few things you can do out of the box to make later maintenance a breeze and to make this knife last for many years of hard use. At a bare minimum, treat the leather handle and sheath before taking into the field. The common complaint for leather-washer handles is the leather shrinking over time, especially if it gets wet repeatedly.

This is an ideal survival knife. It is the sharpest knife I've ever received out of the box. The other side of the tip on the saw side is also sharpened. It is very sturdy, the grip is solid and excellent, won't slip. The guard will keep you safe. The butcap can be used as a hammer or bludgeon. The blade is just long enough to be useful but not so big that it is too heavy or cumbersome. The blade shape is good for cutting. The sheath comes with a sharpening stone and the sheath itself is good, the knife won't fall out even if you don't button the strap, therefore you can wear it in quickdraw mode. This knife could be used for combat in an emergency, although is a little heavy for that, but as a general survival tool and backup fighter it gets 5 stars.

I was given this exact knife nearly 30 years ago when I was in 18th ABNC, by my SgtMajor. We were in and out of South America at the time and I remember he told me that if I ever had to use it I should hollar my "war cry" first. I will never forget him. Over the years I got divorced and I lost track of the knife and actually forgot about it. I happened to think of it one night recently and looked online to see if I could find one like it. This is the exact same knife, so I ordered it. It is still as awesome today as it was then. Oh and by the way, all of my fellow soldiers were so jealous that SgtMajor gave me one and not them. It is better than the medals I was awarded.

I've had one of these knives for years, and my old one is still my favorite camping knife. I wish I'd have bought a case of these back in the 70's when they were in surplus catalogs for around $10. As it was, I just bought the one, and carried it until it was ruined when my old square Bronco ruptured a fuel line and burnt to the ground. My current one is a Camillus, and I've been carrying it for at least 15 years. I was looking around on the internet for a special present to give a friend from Germany who has been here in the states doing graduate work for the last couple years. She's been on many a hiking and camping trip and has proven to be good company. We put her to work up in the Smoky Mountains with the old Camillus batoning fire wood of an evening. I was pleased to find that you can still get these things. This new one I got to give her as a going away present is produced by Ontario Knife, a proven reliable government contractor. I know it sounds sappy, but it was kind of emotional seeing my old knife/friend apparently restored to brand new condition. This Ontario knife is EXACTLY as per the original government contract, right down to the metal reinforcement on the sheath, the several tie off points, and the field grade sharpening stone in the little pouch. The parkerized finish on the blade is just like the originals, so I'm sure it will wear smooth but stay tough over the years to come. The sheath is heavy tanned leather with a solid snapping retention strap. As other reviews have noted, slathering the sheath and the leather washer knife handle with neetsfoot oil or some other preservative is a good idea, as it will keep the leather handle washers from shrinking, preserve the sheath, and generally make the whole package look better.Read more ›

This is a damn well made knife, I used in different enviroments, made great, sharp, holds an edge this coupled with your own kit is a survival knife.
The only difference between this and my Ontario seems my Ontario weighs a little more, but I still would say if you want a damn good knife buy this one.
