This coat fit the bill and with the spare liner I had which fit perfectly, he had a great winter coat.
I am 6ft 1in, have 200 lb and small jacket fits just perfect (still have a place for additional liner).
Fits amazingly well and comfortable and offers many pockets to put his stuff in!

My medium frame sits right in the middle between large and medium so I always buy a medium whenever I can, but sometimes medium clothes will be a little too tight and I have to then try on the large size. Since I am of average size, medium can sometimes be somewhat tight, and then a large can sometimes still be too loose. But selecting the right size Rothco M-65 VINTAGE field jacket was easy to figure out.

What the other reviewers say about the sizing for these jackets having a tendency to be too big is accurate because the jacket is intended to be used with an inside liner installed. But the jacket is not sold with a liner, which must be ordered in addition to the jacket. Buying the jacket in your size without a liner, then the jacket will probably feel too big. Since I always try to wear a medium, I ordered a medium, and then I also ordered a liner for it. Without the liner, the medium looks and feels big on me. However, with the liner installed, at least it doesn't feel too big, and the insulation takes up the extra space, and I'm sure this jacket will do exactly as I expect of it when the winter temps begin to drop way below freezing.

But, I also ordered one of these vintage jackets in small, without a liner, and it still fits my medium frame perfectly. I do not intend to be putting a liner in this jacket because a liner will then make the jacket too small for me. So when they say to buy a size smaller, that is only if you don't intend to use a liner in the jacket. BTW these jackets are somewhat heavy and well insulated without a liner.

I served during Vietnam and this jacket is "deja vu" but my body isn't. I'm currently 5'10" 220lbs, rounded shoulders, thick through chest (and now through the middle). On a sliding scale from mesomorph to endomorph I've always fallen between the two but closer to endomorph. I ordered both a medium and a large jacket based on the sizing comments in other reviews. If I was at my optimum weight of 185 - 190lbs the medium would be an excellent fit (I plan to get back there so I'm keeping the medium). The medium still fits but at my current weight it looks like a fat guy wearing a jacket that's a tad small. The large fits great! So, if you are built like me (~5'10" and packing 30 extra lbs) the large jacket will work well for you.

The jacket is well made. The zipper could keep a gorilla in its cage and the material used in its construction is heavy. I'm very satisfied with this jacket.

Every Vietnam Veteran I know brought his field jacket home and wore it until it literally fell off of his body! I know I did. I have been looking for another for quite a while, and this is it!! This is the best mid-weather jacket ever made, IMHO. While you can easily find the button-in liner which converts the M65 to a cold weather parka, I never used mine and don't know whatever happened to it (the liner). Just buy the coat, and see what all of us already know: Uncle Sam doesn't screw EVERYTHING up (just most things)!

I saw what others said about the sizing so when i bought mine i got a small as opposed to my normal medium in everything else i buy. I probably needed an XS. I'm 5'8 about 145, not a big guy by any standard but these things run even bigger than i would have guessed.

Other than that the jacket is great, very warm. i just removed that lame ultra force name tape and dog tag and it's ready to rock.

After reading many reviews for this product, this is my attempt at writing the ultimate informative review:

First things first: the jacket I received looked exactly like the one pictured above. Same quality. Same color (I ordered olive green). Same everything as pictured above. The only thing that was different was the inclusion of an easily removable "dog tag" chain which was located on one of the chest pockets. Unbutton the pocket and the "dog tags" fall off. Doesn't get easier than that.

If you search around online you can definitely find a better variety of pictures of the jacket. Amazon.com product review policy prevents me from posting links to other sites but here's a trick. Try doing a google images search under: "rothco jacket vintage m65 field in olive drab karmaloop". Hopefully the results should get you some better pictures of the jacket. (In case you are wondering, the pictures I am referring to are the ones with a young woman wearing the jacket in various poses/angles. She looks like she is of latina decent and has her hair up in a bun. hope that helps!)

SIZING - This jacket runs very big. You should probably order down 1 to 2 sizes from your normal size. I would recommend ordering 1 size down if you want a large fit. and 2 sizes down if you'd prefer a slimmer fit.
-- I am 5'11'' and weigh between 160-170 lbs, so I am a pretty slim guy. not stick thin, but not what you would call big or chubby either. I was wanting more of a slimmer fit than a baggier one, so I ordered down 2 sizes and got a size extra small (I normally wear a medium). Inside the jacket is a white patch that says "X-Small Regular. Height: 66in-71in. Chest: Up to 33in" .
