REAL nice flat wound bass strings,
By
This review is from: Rotosound RS77LD Jazz Bass Monel Electric Bass 4 String Set (45-105) (Electronics)
I've been using the Rotosound RS77LDs on my 4 string fretless bass for about 2 months now. I normally use Thomastik-Infeld JF344s. I LOVE the feel of Thomastiks. The Rotos do not feel as soft and rope-like. If you've never tried TI flatwounds, you owe it to yourself to try them. You'll see what i mean. TIs ARE well worth the $40-50 you'll pay for them. BUT the Roto RS77LDs i'm reviewing here have a REALLY nice fullness to their sound. And they also have a very nice feel. They are not as soft as TIs, but they are not TOO different either. Maybe it is because the the low E is .045 compared to the TI JF344's .043. But I am really having a hard time deciding if I want to go back to the Thomastiks now. What i WISH, is that i could get some TI flatwounds that are slightly fatter (like .045-.105). But make no mistake, the very fact that i am split between the TI JF344s and Roto RS77LDs speaks volumes about how nice i think Rotosounds are. They have an awesome feel and an even more awesome sound. These are nothing like other flatwound bass strings such as D'Addario Chromes or Fender flat wounds or Ernie Ball Group IIIs. These Roto RS77LDs are some PREMIUM strings that have a really ideal amount of tension and presence to the sound that give it a really sweet upright-type character. IDK if it is QUITE as much of an upright sound as the Thomastiks give. But here i go waffling again. .. i wish i could find a string that encompasses the qualities of both of my favorite fretless bass strings! But i haven't switched back to the TIs yet, so that's saying something right there. Give the RS77LDs a try!

I decided to try some flat-wound strings on my Carvin bass, having liked the feel and sound of flatwounds that I have used on my other two, less expensive basses. The Rotosound 77 Jazz Bass strings have the classic flat-wound feel; however, the bright ping in the sound suggests round-wound strings. Right from the get-go these strings hold their tuning incredibly well and produce quite a lot of sustain. It was a little annoyed by the metallic dust that came off the strings when I first took them out of the individual paper sleeves, but this might have been a result of the third-party Amazon retailer having had them in stock for some time. Once I cleaned them off, though, I'm happy with the feel, sustain, and especially the intonation. Unfortunately, I really was looking more for the sound of LaBella Deep Talkin' Bass flat-wound strings -- the Rotosounds decidedly are not deep and dark sounding. So, take the product description to heart: these are bright-sounding strings and probably are perfect for the player who wants the round-wound sound with the feel of flats. Certainly, they seem less compromising than ground or semi-round strings.

I wanted a set of flat wounds to try to get the Steve Harris sound, I did not like the heavy gauge he uses,110-50, so I tried these instead. I was worried that I was going to get that old school boomy sound, but was happy to find that these strings can deliver the goods. I use a EQ and a Compressor and I can get a great tone out of these strings. Close enough to Steve Harris that I am happy. Truely a great set of strings.
